How long is the skeg on a mariner 30/40

it's a mercury mariner, the roundy one with oil injection that's painted an awful grey colour.

    1979 Mercury outboard

Your best bet is probably to find a complete used engine, i'm sure if you buy just a block you'll be missing a ton of brackets and linkages that will be difficult/expensive to find on their own.

How long is the skeg on a mariner 30/40

I have bought a boat with a 1996 mariner 30 that has a damaged skeg. I straightened it out and plan to weld on a replacement cast aluminum skeg with 5356 but I have one problem... How long is this supposed to be? I'm assuming maybe 1/2" or so below the prop? Any help would be great, thanks!

    25hp Evinrude

The wiring is really simple on these, not a big deal to fix. If it has good compression and it's cheap I'd take the gamble. Sitting that long you may have to replace upper and lower crank seals, but that's not hard if it isn't all rusty. Water pump is a must.

    Need to reduce ventilation

Thanks! I found a PTT unit on marketplate for $200 (that needed a coupler... weird story), anyway doing the conversion from manual trim to PTT was fantastic. Cupping makes sense, I'm gonna have to take what you said about the blade angle of attack and sit down and look at the thing real close...

    Need to reduce ventilation

How does rake actually cause bow lift? I'm not doubting that it does, I'm just failing to understand it.

    Need to reduce ventilation

I have mounted the motor so the A/V plate juuust skims the surface and doesn't throw a wave on a plane. It is my understanding this is the correct way to mount an engine. With the only change being the propeller I now need significantly less trim for the same amount of bow lift, have better...

    Need to reduce ventilation

Well, the big brown truck showed up so I ducked off work early to go try this new propeller (I work from home and don't really have set hours anyway). I'm posting from my boat because this thing is ridiculous. The most obvious thing right off is it has a lot of bow lift, I don't even know how...

    Motor stops under power

hard to start cold is likely that you either have your idle mixture too lean or something wrong in the priming circuit. This has a priming build that feeds off the bottom of the carb, right? You need to squeeze the ball to fill the carb before using that primer.

    Motor stops under power

If you continuously squeeze the bulb while the engine is running does it still stall?

Accidentally ran 2 stroke mercury 15hp without oil for an hour.

If the bearings don't make angry sounds under load it'll probably still work. You almost certainly scored up the cylinders, how much? Who knows, take a look and do a compression test. My guess is that it'll make less power than before but otherwise still work.

Tell tale or bubbler what’s normal w/o a thermostat

Without a thermostat you'll have a hard time getting it to idle right in cold water, if you do a lot of low speed trolling you'll foul up spark plugs and carbon up your engine without one. If you always run above like 3000rpms or whenever the poppet valve opens you won't notice a difference. I...

    Need to reduce ventilation

The previous owner put this prop on it and it appears unmolested, just a low performance prop. I ordered a turning point prop and hub kit, it's real surprising how cheap those are! The nice thing is if i ever want to go down a pitch the props are like $80 and I just use the same hub. Should be...

    Need to reduce ventilation

Here's a picture of a high contrast "straight" edge across the root of the prop: And a picture around the middle: (yes i know the bottom of the skeg is broken, i need to weld a new piece on; cheap boats are cheap for a reason....) Anyway, this prop has very thick blades and don't appear to...

    Need to reduce ventilation

I have another boat with a 15 pitch solas amita (johnson, so different splines) and it has considerable cup on the trailing edge I can feel, so that's what I was going by; I may be wrong about no cup. With my current engine height the a/v plate just skims the surface of the water; there is a...

    Need to reduce ventilation

I have a 14ft side console Lund with a 40hp mariner/merc with electric trim and have ventilation issues. I have copied the questions from the sticky but the one thing not mentioned here is a/v height above the bottom of the boat. I currently have the engine on its middle mounting hole putting...

    Mercury classic 50 HP - part 2

Such a step-by-step guide exists; you need to buy a factory service manual and it'll walk you through the process.

    Identification help

The needle and seat being stuck isn't really a concern, just replace them. As for the fuel inlet being broken off you may be able to fix it, or have a machine shop fix it. In the past I've been able to drill them out and glue new ones in with an MEK-based contact cement called seal-all. I used...

Power trim Wire, 2 or 3?

Is your third wire going from one of the motor mounting bolts to the clamp bracket of the engine? This is a ground wire to keep the PTT assembly at the same voltage potential as the engine/hull to prevent galvanic corrosion. This has nothing to do with the operation of the unit and it'll work...

Merc 40 hp tracker dies after running full throttle

Is this the same as the mid-90's through early 2000's mariner/merc? If so those don't have headgaskets (at least the 2 cyl version doesn't), they're really simple engines. Do you have grey fuel hose with the inner plastic liner? The liner comes loose and randomly stops the flow of fuel killing...
