    Hi all I was able to get outdrive back on! Fishing time! So the alignment tool I was originally using was machined wrong. Purchased one from a local Mercruiser marina and walla!!!!

    Thank you all for the replies. New to the forum sorry for posting in wrong area. Yes I have the alignment tool. I have aligned the bearing to coupler so that’s why I’m stumped. I will clean all surfaces and start again with a little less grease. Thank you

    water leaking from top cap of upper gearcase

    I’m also having the same issue. Water leaking from top cap however it also leaked into gear box causing milky oil. Had to open both upper and lower gear box and clean/replace any damaged bearings/parts. Have everything back together now except top cap. I will do the “thin” silicone trick and see...

    Thank you for the info. Makes sense. As far as preloading gear/bearing this is something I can do at home or is it that difficult that I will need to take it to a shop? Same for the shim tool this is something I can do at home myself? Also U joints had no oil present they only had grease.
