    CDI High Speed Failure

You were correct - I left the stator in place and instead replaced both switch boxes. I now have spark on all cyls over 3K RPM. The boxes were suspicously cheap but appear to be working for the moment. Thank you sir!

    CDI High Speed Failure

Also if anyone is interested in the aftermarket voltage regulator, I found the old thread here: https://forums.iboats.com/threads/adding-aftermarket-voltage-regulator-anyone-actually-done-this.458373/

    CDI High Speed Failure

I tested everything again with a different meter using cranking speed instead of idle speed, and all seems to be more or less in spec according to the CDI sheet. Not sure why I was getting a weird resistance on the red wire originally. There's no mention of testing the bias circuit, however...

    CDI High Speed Failure

Yeah my battery was fine too, but then I put in a nice little stereo and class D amp, speakers, sub etc. etc. My voltmeter was pegged and the thought of burning all that stuff out was certainly making me sweat a little!

    CDI High Speed Failure

hmm... yeah I don't think I checked the resistance on the bias wire. Nor did I attempt spinning it up with this wire disconnected (I was worried about piston damage while doing this at higher RPM, as the banks could be out of sync, from what I understand). I think I'll investigate a bit more...

    slow drop on T&T, 1982 50 hp

It aint gonna get better over time. There are rebuild kits, do some searching. The O-rings on the pump are easy, maybe try that first. But I believe it's usually the teflon slipper seal in the piston that fails. I had a very difficult time installing this without a special slipper seal tool from...

    CDI High Speed Failure

Yes it has high and low, so yeah that's exactly my thinking. Just wanted to make sure the trigger & boxes didn't get damaged. Especially after pulling this flywheel off again.

    CDI High Speed Failure

Yeah this did cross my mind, and I suppose I took a risk here, however the CDI troubleshooting guide specifically states that a rectifier-regulator should be installed to prevent overcharging the battery. Since no specific replacement model was given, I suppose I assumed there was some leeway...

    CDI High Speed Failure

My motor has an unpainted aluminum flange on the starboard side under the starter, where luckily nothing was attached. I just bolted through it and it also acts as a heat sink. I don't believe your 850 has this kind of roominess, so you might need to get creative... Not my pic but you can see...

    CDI High Speed Failure

I wish I kept the part number but I can't find it. I think I found it in an old thread, probably buried in this forum, where a guy installed it on an early 80s merc. Search for 815279-2 and that's what it physically looks like, with the potted epoxy, 6-wires. The two red wires can be connected...

    CDI High Speed Failure

Engine is an I6 1979 115 ADI ignition, full rebuild in 2018. I replaced both switch boxes, trigger and stator with CDI units. I also added a mercury voltage regulator + rectifier, and bypassed the old diamond shaped rectifier to stop battery overcharging. It's been running great until today...

Merc 115 Tower of Power Won't start

FWIW, my tower needs a lot of fuel to start, even after a full rebuild. Trim all the way in, squeeze fuel past the needles, full throttle in neutral and choke. Gotta be johnny on the spot to pull it back when she goes, but it works. Could try squirting some premix in the carb throats? But yeah a...

    Johnson evinrude 1989 V4 140hp overheating

I don’t believe there is any other “valve”… the t-stats are the valves that control water flow. After a compression test to see if the motor is even worth working on, I would put new t-stats in, perhaps the old ones are sticking or not opening at the correct temperature. I would also look at...

    1965 6HP Gearcase Not Sealing

Right, if the screw was stuck that makes sense. Yes, o-ring was replaced along with the prop/drive shaft seals. Hmm, maybe I'll try to resurface the bearing housing on a piece of glass to take out warpage. It's got some pitting (this entire LU suffers from some pitting/corrosion), so I may look...

    1965 6HP Gearcase Not Sealing

Hi, I put a new gearcase seal kit on this motor in 2017, but oil was very milky when changing it this year. When I put some air in it, I could see it leaking from under the bearing housing, rather than the seals. Took the bearing housing off and the gasket seemed to be disintegrated and...

    Rebuilding evinrude 60hp 60073D

I think you'll need to have the bores mic'd (the full length) to determine how far out they are, then re-bore accordingly. I took mine to a machinist who had the right tools to get that done, and also did the boring.

    Johnson 150 Rebuild by Lectro88

I believe if you run without the stats, it won’t be at optimal temperature to properly ignite the fuel mix. Running cold like that could eventually lead to carbon buildup behind rings and poof...

1982 Johnson 90 hp carburator question.

I had this problem on my ‘89 110. Rebuilt carbs with no change. Wound up doing a whole re-bore due to scuffed cyls - wish I could tell you what the fix was in particular, but I can tell you it now idles fine trimmed all the way up now, so it’s not normal. My cyl heads were resurfaced, new fuel...

    1989 V4 110 Multiple Ring Failures

Hello, wondering if I could get some opinions here. Model BJ110TLCEM had this motor since 2016, ran very well until last fall. My compression test showed 80 psi on both starboard holes, ring failure seen in the intake ports. I tore it down and both pistons appear to have failed in the same...

    1986 16' Grumman Transom (aluminum / outboard)

Hi all, I've begun the process of replacing my first transom on a fishing rig, a 1986 Grumman "Skidaddle" made in Marathon NY. It rides hard but I like its high sides and thickness of the old aluminum, and the PO put a new floor in which saves me some work. I could see the transom wood was...
