Autopilot set-up for Alpha 1 Gen 1 outdrive

Lake Ontario salmon trolling at depth is 2-3 knots. Surface speed will vary accordingly. Most trailered boats up here will typically run a 9.9 - 15hp kicker to save on the main. Some have tried using a trolling plate but the consensus view is concern that it causes seal damage on the prop shaft...

Autopilot set-up for Alpha 1 Gen 1 outdrive

Very common set-up on Great Lakes for salmon fishing.

Autopilot set-up for Alpha 1 Gen 1 outdrive

I probably should have stated that I was looking to delete the Pump and Power assist and replace with a SeaStar hydraulic helm and ram.

Autopilot set-up for Alpha 1 Gen 1 outdrive

Looking for experienced opinions on setting up autopilot on a 1984 Alpha 1 Gen 1 power assisted stern drive (22' with 3.8L). It's for a fishing boat that I will ultimately connect the 9.9 kicker with an EZ steer connector.

    4.3 swap

Scott, appreciate the in-depth details. A lot to absorb... So to confirm, if in fact the motor a 3.8l and not a 4.3l as advertised, is there any interchangeability between the two? I am primarily looking motor mount, electrical, and the outdrive.

    4.3 swap

I haven't inspected anything yet, so perhaps either the year of the boat is wrong?

    4.3 swap

The '84 came up out of nowhere and I haven't had the opportunity to research, but a couple of things I came across last night that I questioned was 87 a balanced motor (is this internal and they nixed the external balancer) and that the Thunderbolt Ignition system is no longer available?

    4.3 swap

I'm in the process of a 1987 Starcraft Islander restoration and one of the issues is the 4.3L that came with the boat. I have located a 1984 donor boat with a 4.3L that upon future inspection may be an option. Before I go too much further with the inspection/acquisition, would those with much...

    22' Islander rebuild

SHSU: Appreciate your response, shows great character... For the record, I wasn’t judging you or anyone else for their comments or helpful suggestions. In my lifetime, I’ve come to realize many of the paths we cross are not accidents. So when that inner voice speaks and says - Dude, say...

    22' Islander rebuild

For anyone reading this now or in the future, boat trailers are not regulated by the NTSB like an automobile. As such, the safety margins for loading are not the same. Adding several thousand pounds of water in addition to the weight of a boat on an older trailer is a risk. The dangers lie in...

    22' Islander rebuild

You can get them trough Amazon as well: Body Panel Suction Pullers. You basically need to get two sizes, one larger and one smaller. Use the larger one for multiple rivets on flatter surfaces and the smaller one for single rivets on irregular surfaces and to identify which rivet leaks if the...

1989 Starcraft Islander 221V repair and repower

Thought this link might be of use: https://info.nuwavemarine.com/mercruiser-alpha-outdrive-gear-tooth-chart/ I would suggest you try and keep the gear ratio and prop pitch as close to OEM as possible. Marine applications are based on prop speed and unless you fully understand the performance...

1989 Starcraft Islander 221V repair and repower

Starcraft Islanders are great towable boats, very seaworthy. Their only real issue is how light they are and tend to beat the wave rather than break it. A youtube video is worth a thousand words... I understand about 200 lbs in the bow in conjunction with trim tabs has a very positive effect...

1989 Starcraft Islander 221V repair and repower

Thought I'd drop in and say hello on your thread... Mine is a 4.3L and I believe it will interchange easily with your boat. If you're serious about a full upgrade, strongly suggest looking for a donor boat as I believe you'll want the higher geared outdrive as well. Having had a few boats over...

    22' Islander rebuild

I would caution anyone doing using that method... 1 cubic foot of water = 62.4 lbs. Do the math and the overall weight adds up quickly. Add in a rusty trailer and it's probably not the safest thing to be under that boat/trailer on a creeper with no time to react if something gives quickly...
