Have a 17 foot 1991 Sunbird with 2.3L 4 cyc.OMC Cobra I/O. Hard shifting most of the time, but now stalls when shifting into reverse. Out of water on trailer it shifts fine forward and reverse. Occasionally get a thump (like you hit something) in forward. Probably the original shift cable...
