1996 Four Winns Sundowner with 5.0 Cobra engine and drive

I nearly did decide to remove it, gave it a hard enough tug thinking it would come off but it didn't. I could obviously remove it by tugging harder or cutting it off but when it didn't come off with the tug I thought it's obviously meant to be there. It would be more difficult to access it now...

I should've taken a picture of it showing where it attaches to the bottom rear of the bell. Very securely fitted, has a 90degree pivot (at least free turning) joint to the bell. Can only presume it's intended as some kind of vent/drain but such vent/drain seems uncessary because the spacer plate...

1996 Four Winns Sundowner with 5.0 Cobra engine and drive

Got the engine back in today :) Ex police inspector friend came over to help but didn't have much to do after we'd moved the engine from the stand to the crane while I attached the spacer plate, flywheel, coupler, bellhousing and starter motor. I couldn't find what torque to tighten the coupler...

1996 Four Winns Sundowner with 5.0 Cobra engine and drive

Thanks @ScottinAZ. It's not at the top of my list of priorities regards the boat at the moment but I will be wanting/needing a spare wheel for the trailer and I like to carry a spare wheel bearingfor a boat trailer even if all the bearings seem good. The bearings seem OK (or at least they...

Thanks Scottin, heh that makes sense, I feel daft now for asking. Are they just tapered roller bearings? I bought some of the lithium+calcium grease I linked to above. Also bought this GL5 75/90 gear oil from a marine parts supplier who listed it on Ebay https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/373859721624

1996 Four Winns Sundowner with 5.0 Cobra engine and drive

Thanks Kenny. What I mean by up/down/side to side is that I can move the input shaft (in the engine bay with the engine removed but drive fitted) in all directions a little. I can understand the shaft needing to move forward/backward a little but didn't know if being able to move it in the...

1996 Four Winns Sundowner with 5.0 Cobra engine and drive

Thanks for the replies and info since my last visit to the forum. @alldodge Seems somebody intentionally wired in an engine immobiliser... not that it would take anyone who knows how to oldskool hotwire a car long to get around it. @ScottinAZ It could be a good idea to fit a gauge directly to...

Yes it does look like a car style set of dash gauges. Like you, the thought did occur that if I couldn't get them working properly I could replace them all with aftermarket gauges, maybe make a wooden panel to hold them and fit where the factory gauge panel was, a wooden panel would look even...

1996 Four Winns Sundowner with 5.0 Cobra engine and drive

Ahh I see what you mean, yes I think mine is a similar design. My main reason for wanting the gauges to work properly at the moment is because it's a newly rebuilt engine, want to keep checking oil pressure and engine temp. The ex owner said he didn't understand engines but was good with...

1996 Four Winns Sundowner with 5.0 Cobra engine and drive

Great info, thanks @ScottinAZ Only going on memory but I seem to remember there is wiring to some sort of solenoid attached to the choke flaps on my carb... Assuming I'm right and they control the choke, should the choke be controlled by some temp switch in the manifold? Also (sigh, sorry...

1996 Four Winns Sundowner with 5.0 Cobra engine and drive

Thanks @ScottinAZ There are no dust caps on the trailer wheel bearings, is that how the bearing buddies are supposed to be? Is there another grease nipple (that I haven't noticed) besides the bearing buddy nipple? Does packing the bearing buddy also pack the bearing? Would the Evinrude Tripple...

1996 Four Winns Sundowner with 5.0 Cobra engine and drive

@ScottinAZ If I remove the pump backplate will I need a new gasket? Can the bearing housing be dismantled/greased? I think we established my setup labelled OMC Cobra is the crossover between OMC Cobra and Volvo SX units... So far everything I've seen points to the drive being a Volvo SX except...

1996 Four Winns Sundowner with 5.0 Cobra engine and drive

Just a short reply tonight, been out for a.curry with my son and daughter in law for a curry and typing this on my phone.. my fingers are too old and thick for this! Incidentally, small world, my daughter in law is from Louisiana. @ScottinAZ Thanks that's reassuring. How tight is your pulley to...

1996 Four Winns Sundowner with 5.0 Cobra engine and drive

I bought the used coupler, should have it in a few days but I won't get time to do much work on the boat until at least Wednesday anyway. Next time I work on the boat I'll probably be checking the new (to me) coupler on the input shaft splines to compare play between my old one and this one...

Seems new couplers are difficult to get hold of and expensive here. I could pay £400+ and have to wait for shipping from the US but I've just seen this used one on Ebay at £150 which I could have here by Tuesday. What do you think to the teeth on this one?

1996 Four Winns Sundowner with 5.0 Cobra engine and drive

Ahh... Thanks. I see what you mean in the picture. I'll try to make time tomorrow to have another look. Should they be square? Are worn splines a known problem on boat drives? Should the input shaft be a tight fit in the coupler?

1996 Four Winns Sundowner with 5.0 Cobra engine and drive

Thanks. I just tried another way of checking the coupler... Just fitted it to the splines inside the boat and turned it. I didn't use any equipment other than my eyes to check it but it seems OK. I am surprised with how loose it is on the splines though. Usually splined joints are tight but...

1996 Four Winns Sundowner with 5.0 Cobra engine and drive

The drive went on easy after cleaning everything up and adding some new grease :) . I've attached the rams to it, tilted it up and will see if it drops overnight. Still need to know what grease to use for the UJ joints and gimble bearing. May buy an alignment tool but they cost around £79...

I'll quote myself so you can see what I'm referring to in this post I took a pic of the pinched bellow today. In the pic below you can see the 4 areas at the rear of the bellow I mean. I now realise they match up to the 4 areas of the drive leg that are indented and mate up to the bellows...
