9 amp to 16 amp stator overcharging

I kept boiling the battery with my 1975 850 Merc. Voltage gauge was running at 17 anywhere above half throttle. Installed a 6 wire regulator, voltage now steady at 14.5v. You'll have to get creative with mounting.

    1974 50hp Mercury

I purchased an old pontoon boat to get the trailer and 850 (1975) Mercury. It also wouldn't idle slowly by ear (I didn't have a Tach). I did a link n sink and found that previous owner had the timing belt advanced one tooth. Timing sets the idle speed.

    Distributor harness 1976 mercury 115

A few years ago there was a detailed post with pictures showing how a member removed the filler/potting material, gaining access to solder posts for those wires. I should have saved the information but didn't. Might try searching the archives.

Mercruiser 3.0 cranks but wont start

Mine is a 1979 and uses glass tube fuses. Same symptoms, I checked Ignition fuse in place with ohm meter, OK. Checked while engaging starter, no voltage on engine side of fuse. Released starter and voltage returned to engine side of Ignition fuse. Pulled fuse, oxidized badly, cleaned, replaced...

    Mercruiser 3.0

Being a 4 cylinder there should be room to get to starter lugs. To rule out starter, unhook both battery cables +. - Attached a good set of jumper cables neg to engine block positive to starter lug/bolt, attach pos jumper cable to pos battery post. Firmly touch neg jumper cable to neg battery...

    Pontoon I/O 140hp

1st easy check, is there a rope wrapped around prop? My IO did and melted some of the rope into a disk between prop and lower unit, tearing the prop seal.

I too have that problem and with 1/2 the HP. 1979 Century 190 with 140hp four banger. Trimming up helps but then lose prop grip.

Confused? Voltage Regulator vs Rectifier; Tach & Charging

I had overcharging problems with my 850 Merc. It would climb to 17 volts at 4k rpm, boiled the battery. I replaced the rectifier with a 6 wire regulator. 14.5 volts at any speed above 2k rpm. It has a Tach wire too. I had to get creative with mounting.

    Decking Question

3/4 inch Exterior ccx under vinyl is the way I went. Use 1/2" risers under railings is the key for water shedding. I also shimmed furniture and helm with ridged plastic. The old deck lasted 20 years under carpet and No risers.

Tachometer for 1978 Mercury 500 Thunderbolt

You'll need a tach driven by a signal from one of the yellow stator wires.

    Trim Limit and Sender Help

True, I spliced/soldered new wire on trim and stop limits, then ran them up an over transom until I needed to remove complete outdrive for repairs.

    mercruiser lower unit install

Spline isn't lined up with upper half. Try turning prop while holding pressure on lower unit. You DO have both the Helm and lower in forward gear, right?

Doesn’t go straight, left to right back and forth at idle?

A 4-Blade prop will help some but it'll still wander.

Does anyone remember when car & boat engines only had.

Correct, many riders say "how did you start it?" My Merc 300 and 650's are magnito driven. Parts are $$$ and hard to find, especially the points.

    Anybody use OTA TV?

Never had satellite, never had cable, never had Internet programs. I remember not having a Television until 7 years old. Yep, I'm old, 77. My OTA 22-27 channels is a bonus from the 50's 3 black and white shows.

    Ignition wire gauge?

The old wiring is 16 gauge. Couple of years ago I'd spliced (soldered) a cable (8 wire 14 gauge) into the old 6 " from engine female coupling. Thought the wires from there to coupling were good (wrong). I'm running a 14 gauge wire from console to switch box (summer) is here 😊
