    1998 4.3 GL Head Replacement

The thermostat functions as a gate valve allowing water in the block to exit but it will only do that if the engine generates enough heat so that the water stays above the set point of the 'stat. And on a cool fall day idling with cold water coming in via the water hose that may not happen.

I’d wonder why the exhaust seats were hammered? Low octane fuel? Lean fuel mix? Too much spark advance? Boat is not reaching specified max rpm with current prop? All those should be investigated to avoid a recurrence…. BTW I know some think that 87 octane fuel is fine but my old OMC Cobra...

    Starter for V8-300-C-A

Could you just use the normal nut on the starter solenoid stud? Not seeing why there is a need for a spacer unless something is mounted on the engine that interferes with the normal mounting.

    1998 4.3 GL Head Replacement

Go onto west marines' website, they have a tech article on antifreezes and tell you what to use for your climate. Here -60 would be adequate, because we never get below 0*F, but if you get below zero, -100 is the only thing to use, IMHO. I have a refractometer and mix up my own Sierra PG...

    1998 4.3 GL Head Replacement

Better yet add a half closed cooling system. If I keep my old boat long enough to need a repower there is no way on earth that I’m leaving it raw water cooled. At 68 years old I am done with pulling out the rear seats to get at the block drains. That’s the right way to do it but after 20 years...

    1998 4.3 GL Head Replacement

The whole problem with running AF in is this: because of the way raw water cooling works if you don’t drain the block first you can’t count on the thermostat staying open long enough to get all the water out. So it really only makes sense to fully manually drain & back fill with AF if you want...

    New to Volvo family

An Evinrude prop on a VP? I know there was a joint venture years ago when the OMC Cobras were the same as Volvo SXs (1994-1998) but I didn't know they are still using the same splines....

Mercury 6.2 ECT DTS Axius Voltage Issue

could there be a capacitor somewhere storing current? I found that out the hard way one day about 45 years ago when I tried to take a timing light apart to "fix" it.

Mercury 6.2 ECT DTS Axius Voltage Issue

Hey Ted you need any helpers lol! Years ago I was at a NASCAR race with my boss and his son, and one of my best friends we all worked together. All of the sudden the woman next to us stands up and exclaims, OH MY GOD WE RAN OUT OF BEER! It just struck us as hilarous, who cares about who's...

One Stringer or Engine Block is slightly compromised Question

CPES is just a thinned epoxy, you can make your own if you want that. It soaks into end grain wood very well but it's not a replacement for cutting out rot. I have used it on a few resto projects but it is more to treat what's left after you cut out the bad stuff.

Mercury 6.2 ECT DTS Axius Voltage Issue

If you look closely at mine you can see the end made contact with a crank pulley as well but I can’t blame anyone for that one lol. I think the last car I used that on was my 1980 Honda Civic 1300!

Mercury 6.2 ECT DTS Axius Voltage Issue

I think the spec on my old Jeep was 30-50 milliamps after all the modules power off. Many draws happen because a module is not powering off as it should.

Mercury 6.2 ECT DTS Axius Voltage Issue

Could that be a sign of a parasitic draw? I had to track one down on my old 98 Jeep. Turned out to be a rusty relay in the trailer tow harness.. I had a battery going flat after only about a week or 2 of not driving it and when I looked up my meter to this special Lisle harness made for checking...

Manifolds (Trying to figure out what I am looking at)

I have heard about that crystallization issue, and posted up pix of my old heads, and as far as I am concerned it doesn't happen in my salt water at least for cast iron. It's not salt, salt dissolves in water, it is calcium as far as I know. So just for that reason I would not fear using a 160...

One Stringer or Engine Block is slightly compromised Question

I agree with the rest, fix it right now and be proud, or else lol. And I HATE fiberglass work

Manifolds (Trying to figure out what I am looking at)

Well I have never owned a Mercruiser so I can't say why it would be that you'd have overheating with a cold manifold set up, unless Merc's thermostat housing was different flow wise from OMC/Volvo's. My engine originally had the V6 batwings, ran 3 sets of those, at the last replacement I had to...
