    1981 Springbok 18' Restoration/Renovation

Found a good quality SS316 from the local marina. Have the marine ply backing for it in clamps as we speak for the glue to cure and then I’ll get to cutting and fitting it properly.

    1981 Springbok 18' Restoration/Renovation

Looking at my options for replacing the bow eye on the hull as the previous one was bent and quite rusty. The holes are 1-5/8" apart and found the exact bow eye on amazon. It appears that it is made of a Zinc Alloy Steel and Chrome Plated, the old one clearly rusted for a reason as it seems it...

    1981 Springbok 18' Restoration/Renovation

Between applying sealer coats to the transom and being at work, i had some time yesterday to test the hull for leaks now that the largest hole, being the outdrive was covered and riveted in place. I filled the boat with enough water to be over the seams where the floor meets the sides. I ended...

1973 Starcraft SuperSport 16ft. restoration questions

Been following along with your thread for as long as I've known about iboats, finally made an account to start logging the journey of my own restoration. You and the admiral have done a phenomenal job thus far and it's been extremely helpful for myself to plan out how I will attack my old...

Restoration project - 1965 AlumaCraft Maracaibo

how did you go about removing all the paint? I'm in the progress of my own restoration and will have to remove some paint as well... not sure if ill just self etch prime the bare areas and paint over the previous paint with a good sanding or get the whole hull bare and start there. Struggling...

    1981 Springbok 18' Restoration/Renovation

The outer skin is now fully cured, and all the solid rivets have been installed and set. I went around the perimeter of the transom skin putting a rivet in every 1-1/2", it came out looking very good and im impressed with the strength it added to the transom. I installed the Z braces with rivets...

    1981 Springbok 18' Restoration/Renovation

Still not able to upload pictures, becoming rather frustrating but making good progress. I’ve got the outer skin epoxied onto the boat and fully cured, allowed it to sit a few days being clamped with the humidity we’ve been having and seems to be nearly impossible to ever remove. Started with...

    1981 Springbok 18' Restoration/Renovation

While I’ve been waiting to epoxy the skin on, I went and got a sheet of 3/4” ply to make the transom. Managed to make both pieces out of 1 sheet which was very nice. Currently letting the adhesive set between the two pieces while I’ve got it screwed and weighted down. What is the best way to...

    1981 Springbok 18' Restoration/Renovation

Finally able to upload photos again, waiting on some epoxy thickener to show up so haven’t gotten any further with adhering the skin to my transom. Drilled all the required holes for fittings and rivets through both sheets while it was temporarily taped/bolted in place.

Unable to post a picture of the skin fitted onto the transom, getting an error message: "The upload failed because the file could not be written to the server. The site administrator will need to resolve this before any files can be uploaded." Will post pictures and more updates when i am able to!

    1981 Springbok 18' Restoration/Renovation

I finally got the outer transom skin cut from my cardboard template and after multiple times of sanding and filing, the fit is perfect. I used random nuts and bolts i had laying around to hold it in place while i went around marking where it needs to be trimmed down. I'm waiting on a new...

    Lowrance LCX-112C

fished yesterday on lake erie with the new transducer, set my system on the 200kHz setting and the depth read at all speeds. went to the dual frequency setting page and 50 did not read as expected. The depth matched up great with my garmin striker 4 and was off by about 1.2 feet as theyre...

    Lowrance LCX-112C

Got a brand new 83/200, going to set my system to 200 as I normally fish the 60-80 foot range on erie. I’ll know by Friday if this is the solution needed

    Lowrance LCX-112C

Any deeper than 30 ft I get a blinking depth that will occasionally find the bottom depth but never stays constant enough to mark fish. I’ve read through the manuals like a bible and other forums and went ahead and got a replacement transducer to see if that’s where my issues were coming from...

    Lowrance LCX-112C

I’ve got a lowrance unit, new to me, it’s got a chip in it that displays the mapping feature perfectly and the depths and contours align almost perfectly despite being older technology. The transducer I had was having some serious issues and whether I set it to 50 or 200 kHz would never pick up...

    1981 Springbok 18' Restoration/Renovation

Transom skin completely cleaned up and free of any old paint. Going to give the inside of the skin a good cleaning and make sure it doesn’t have any contaminants in the holes that could interfere with the epoxy. I’m going to use the Gflex 655 epoxy to bond the skin onto the transom, by sanding...

    1981 Springbok 18' Restoration/Renovation

Also going to try and find a good chemical paint remover for the interior as the gunwales are going to be slightly redesigned and I don’t want to wire wheel them completely for time and effort sake.

    1981 Springbok 18' Restoration/Renovation

Got the rear skin completely rid of all the old paint… was that ever a tough job. It’s a good sign for the rest of the hull as now I’m only planning on cleaning up any chipped areas and then self etch primer, and hoping to leave the previous paint on to paint over the whole thing. I’m going to...

12V battery system - adding ACR

I am looking into adding an ACR or an 1/2/B switch to my current electrical system. I've been reading lots into the BlueSea ACR system and the ease of installation and reliability behind it. I've also seen how a make-before-break 1/2/B switch can do the same job, with the risk of forgetting to...
