    1981 Springbok 18' Restoration/Renovation

Day 2 of filling in holes on the horizontal top side of my gunwales, there were 186 total holes… most of which were from various rod holders and other mounts. Only 55 to go and then 22 on the vertical edge. I decided to go about this situation with welding as it will be a permanent bond that...

    1981 Springbok 18' Restoration/Renovation

Got back to working on the boat today, last night was a late one getting home in the early hours of the morning after the game in Detroit but we’re 1-0 and looking forward to next week. Spent the afternoon welding and filling in the holes on the topside of the gunwales, they had all been used...

    Aluminum Boat Transom Knee

Which of these two designs would provide optimal strength for my transom. The first being between the rearmost rib and the transom, the second extending up to the 2nd rib from the back and going over the first rib. Would the cut around the first rib weaken this design in any way? I thought I...

    Aluminum Boat Transom Knee

I’ve got 7-1/2” of length on the base of my knee brace from where the transom will meet up to the first rib. Whats a general rule of thumb for the length extending along the transom? Would 14” be okay as it doesn’t interfere with my splashwell and provides a large surface area?

    1981 Springbok 18' Restoration/Renovation

Still waiting on the thumb to heal up a bit more before i begin using power tools again to avoid tearing the skin open, so for now i've created a few files to visualize how the transom will be braced to the hull. I've got some 0.100" aluminum i plan to bend into the shape i need for my main knee...

    Aluminum Boat Transom Knee

What thickness is optimal? I’m not sure if the required bends will be easily doable in a standard brake, would clamping to a table or steel and using a deadblow hammer be acceptable?

    Aluminum Boat Transom Knee

one more thing... whats the optimal thickness for the triangle aluminum sheet i would weld to the tubing?

    Aluminum Boat Transom Knee

thank you, welding is very doable as i've got the TIG equipment but have read both good and bad about both but as ive seen with bending some thinner stuff it did not like to be bent past 60 degrees and this piece will have 8 90 degree bends in it which seems awful to do. I'll look into this advice!

    Aluminum Boat Transom Knee

Currently in the process of restoring/building an aluminum boat and have been converting it from an I/O, closed bow to an outboard, open bow for fishing. I've got my open bow bracing and structural stuff figured out. But im trying to get a sense of what i need to do for the transom knee brace...

    1981 Springbok 18' Restoration/Renovation

Got the bow eye aluminum plate epoxied on with my limited hand abilities. Going to wait until I’ve got some help to put some solid rivets in but very happy with the Gflex to fill all voids and securely bond the plate to the keel. Found my gloves from the rubble after my rushed morning to the...

    1981 Springbok 18' Restoration/Renovation

Well well well, safe to say my progress for the next couple weeks will be limited as I had a negative encounter with a tablesaw this morning. Was working on cutting some 2x4’s to create a reach clamp as I needed them to hold some pieces on that normal clamps wouldn’t apply pressure in far areas...

    1981 Springbok 18' Restoration/Renovation

Got to Erieau just before 7am yesterday, launched and had lines in the water by 7:30, back at the ramp and boat on the trailer by 11am. Managed a 2 man limit with a bonus steelie on the day! Was nice to get on the big water again and thankful for some calm conditions. Back to work today...

    1981 Springbok 18' Restoration/Renovation

today I worked away at testing out the fit on my newly welding and fabricated inner transom skin. Seems to fit quite well! Have somewhat of a warp in it from the welding process but once I bolted it into the hull it flattened out quite well and fits great against all the surfaces...

    1981 Springbok 18' Restoration/Renovation

This was while I was doing a leak test, glad we had a water tanker on the farm or else it would have taken much longer through the hose lol. Found only a few rivets with a dribble so replaced all of them as stated above. Hit the hull with a power washer to try and remove as much residual...

    1981 Springbok 18' Restoration/Renovation

epoxied, clamped, and then added some self etching primer after using a 50/50 vinegar/water mixture to wash/etch the new skin. Installed with solid rivets around the perimeter and then applied the primer and drain hole. Only remaining holes in the skin at this point are for the transom tie downs...

Completely unrelated from your work, how are you uploading images right now? I’ve been attempting through iboats with no success. How do I post images with imgur?

    1981 Springbok 18' Restoration/Renovation

Today I cut the aluminum sheet I had into an inner transom sheet, the wood will be sandwiched between this inner sheet and the outer sheet I have previously re-skinned. I used some leftover trimmings from it to make tabs that can be riveted to the hull around the edges. I’m currently welding...
