    Older Boats

    Now that's an understatement.

Why I do not have new boats.

That's true. I bought a brand new 1984 Stingray 190 SVB and paid $9500 cash. Sold it in 2019 for $6500. Yup. 35 years and about 30%.

Why I do not have new boats.

I carry a can aboard and use it when circumstances require it. Down on my knees aft and my saying is: "I'm going to check the motor." The wife has seen it before and the boys do the same. Today, I was out fishing by myself. NO one in sight. To heck with the can. One hand on the bimini...

Boat with paint cracks and hull damage

Gelcoat cracks are either due to a PO that ran the crap out of the boat, or simply hull stress. Regardless, you can spend megabucks to fix them, but eventually they will return. Money wasted. Live with it.

Why I do not have new boats.

A Trust is necessary for anyone and everyone. Been there, done that. However, the jeopardy is not in that regard. I did the computer program to estimate my life span. My goal is to draw down the assets so I don't waste any money and don't leave too much behind. My kids are doing better than...

Why I do not have new boats.

My position is that if I have to finance a "toy" I can't really afford it and I don't really need it. I guess I have been luckier than most. Every new boat I have bought has never had to go back to the dealer......not for anything. I have done all the routine maintenance myself. My single...

When do you pull your freshwater boat?

Looks like we may have deviated from the OP's question. To answer it concisely: In days past when I had an I/O I winterized early October. Waited for a sunny day so I could do the fogging in the driveway. Then get her back in the garage for the other items. Today, with a 4-stroke outboard I...

Why I do not have new boats.

I'll take the other side of the argument. I ALWAYS buy new. To me depreciation is non-existent. I keep my boats a long time and do meticulous maintenance. I rarely use a mechanic. Do 95% of the stuff myself. Case in point...the last boat I sold was 35 years old and it sold the first day...

When do you pull your freshwater boat?

If you have "almost nothing" condensation and are using E10, problem solved. If you are using E0 you have no ability to take care of the problem and you have water collecting on the bottom of the tank. A "little" amount of water can be handled. A "lot" of water is another problem. Phase...

1993 Evinrude 70hp Missing Prop, Seeking Recommendations

Obviously, you have no starting point data and you are flying blind. No sense for any of us to list what you need. Get a prop catalog (Michigan wheel would be my choice....Solas?) and search for your motor and general boat size and go from there. When you try the suggested prop, come back...

Transducer location for mercruiser outboard boat (pic included)

I would have positioned it about 6" more to starboard. But I see that your bunk is in the way. My first choice would be to reposition the boat so the bunks are not sticking out. Second choice would be to move the ducer to the starboard side of the bunk.

When do you pull your freshwater boat?

I looked this up again so I could post a link to what Merc had on their website back maybe 5 years ago. I couldn't find it. What they post today is a little bit different. Before: Run the tank as low as possible and stabilize what's left. Fill in Spring. If that's not possible, second...

When do you pull your freshwater boat?

Completely vs. Almost. Are we arguing about semantics here? What is completely? Until the gas pump nozzle trips? Until there is gas coming up in the tank filler hose? Now, when did you fill it? Mid November when it was 30 degrees? What about that odd January thaw when the garage rises to...

When do you pull your freshwater boat?

Mercury Marine has published guidelines for off-season storage, plus there are many write-ups about the myths of ethanol. Bottom line is completely empty or almost full if stabilized. Regardless, the storage conditions are most important. If kept in a dry garage the chances of condensation...

When do you pull your freshwater boat?

I built a garage (barn) big enough to fit the boat. I WON'T leave my prized possession out in the elements. Starting about early September I stabilize the gas in the tank and add more every time I add more gas. Come October, when the snow starts to fly, I'm ready to winterize and I have no...

    Four Winns H190 Trailer bunks

"EZ Slides" are "plastic" and they make launching and retrieving a breeze. They are a polymer material and the surface acts as a lubricant. Been using them for decades and have yet to see any problem with gelcoat.

    Stuck Gas Gauge

2015 Yamaha FXHO Cruiser. The gas gauge bars got stuck at about 1/2 tank. When I filled it up to about 3/4 tank it went up. Now as it uses gas it won't come down. I'm assuming there is some sort of float in the tank. I can pull the seat and see how much I have left, but I'd rather have the...

    Murphy's law

Yes, "most" of the gas comes out, but not all. The general consensus back in the 1950's was to run the motor out of gas if it was not to be used in the short term. Grandpa always did that and I followed his rule. Naturally, everyone has an opinion and their rule works all the time. On...

    Murphy's law

Motors are not supposed to run WOT unless the choke is closed all the way. "few Years"....the gas is crap. Drain and refill. If using the choke other than starting and initial few seconds of warm up, the carb needs to be cleaned.

    Leaking fuel tank

Second gaskets are not the norm. Maybe your tank is dented at the fitting place. If it were me I'd buy a new tank.
