    Marine Insurance

My BoatUS covers fines for a little over $1 million. My new Progressive is only up to about $900,000. After signing up for the Progressive for the 'ski, and finding it so cheap, I looked into my auto as well. It's also a significant savings. I have not checked yet if the auto/home discount...

    Marine Insurance

I've had Boat US / Geico for many years now. When I checked they were always the most competitive, plus the almost unlimited towing coverage and zero deductible were additional benefits. I just got my "jetski" insurance renewal and it went up 41%. I have a 820 credit rating and have never had...

What gives with helping people with a problem ?????????????

My opinion is that most of the "Lost" posters really didn't believe the suggestions, and / or found them too expensive or complicated, and thus never followed up anyway.

    Winch replacement suggestions

Way before straps were invented we used a rope. My boats were always garage kept, nevertheless rope longevity was poor. One year I bought an aftermarket steel cable and the crimped fitting on the hook broke the first time out. Back to rope. A few years later I bought a much larger boat...

    Kicker motor mount height

Some of the new fishing boats (Starcraft in particular) have factory setup kickers, with dual single lever throttle/shift. They are really cool. Most even have power trim on both engines, so you can be lazy and never even leave the driver's seat. But, they also have full time dual steering...

    Kicker motor mount height

I agree a 6 HP is adequate for "trolling", but it may not be big enough for use in an emergency. Based on my past boats, I believe a 9.9 will bring you up to hull speed, so a 20 would not provide any extra benefit and it would be more cumbersome to operate. The picture in post 8 shows a...

    What do these knobs do?

If you want lengthy dissertation on mechanicals, go to the university and get an edumacation. If you simply want to get your boat to run right, follow post #3.

    Transom

We are both OLD. Even though in our middle 70's we still ride a jetski. Not like we stole it, but we do occasional hit 50. With our grey hair we do sometimes get looks. That makes us proud. When we are no longer able to handle it, THEN I'll be depressed. Now we are retired. If the time...

" Prosessing " a donor boat. Best way?

In our case, having kids increased the amount of boating time. Today, both of our boys have boats of their own. OTOH, in our case Iphones had not been invented yet. If they had been, they would not have been allowed in the boat.

Identify boat trailer please, and conversion to utility trailer

It's an EZLoader. Based on the pictures showing the deterioration and the physical damage, it's scrap metal. Utility trailers don't cost that much. The money to restore that rusted metal will be more than buying a new one.

    Trim and tilt question

Its not a jack plate. It trims and tilts only, no vertical lift. The pictures were not taken from the correct angle, but it looks like the AV plate is a couple inches above the bottom of the boat.

    Transom

At the ramp before going home, we always wipe the boat down. Once someone told me that when the boat gets old I won't go thru all that trouble. When I told the person that the boat was already 35 years old, they couldn't believe it. The most money I ever spent on a boat is my current new...

Mercury Barb Male / Female Connection

The female ends are on both ends of the hose. Always open the gas tank cap before disconnecting a hose. I disconnect the hose almost never. I simply fill the tank in the boat from a portable gas can. When we had carburetors we disconnected the motor end after each outing and ran the motor "dry".

its been a sad time the past few weeks.

Every Winter I go thru the house and pick stuff that was not used in awhile. Throw it in the back of the car and off to the Salvation Army. St. Jude and the SA are the most worthy causes around. For boat related stuff, a curb alert on Marketplace and it'll be gone in a few hours...

    Trim and tilt question

It looks just about right to me. With the motor set back that far on the bracket, it is logical that for optimum performance you would mount it higher. If the hole shot is good and it planed well, simply don't trim it up. If for some reason you WAN'T to trim it up, re-drill the holes in the...

    What size trailer?

I did not know that. Is that a state reg or federal? Is there a minimum distance?

    Kicker motor mount height

I always tried to have a straight connection between motors. But I found out that it wasn't absolutely necessary. If a bracket is cantilevered out far, there needs to be a heck of a big metal backup plate inside the transom.

    What size trailer?

Weight the whole rig. Measure the tongue weight with a bathroom scale. Move the boat forward or back to get the tongue at 5-10% of the total weight. If there is insufficient tongue length to get the job done, move the axle. If your total length now is too long for the garage, maybe you can...

    What size trailer?

First, you buy a trailer based on the proper boat length and weight. Then, you adjust the boat position fore and aft to get the proper tongue weight. The winch post will be where it us. There is no "proper" position. If you put a 16' boat on a 20' trailer, there will be a large distance...

    Kicker motor mount height

For a "normal" setup, the prop should be below the bottom of the boat, or "mostly" below the bottom. The position of the AV plate is less important because the boat won't plane. By normal I mean on a "std" type bracket positioned close to the transom. If you are extending the mount past the...
