If the gauges have markings on the back you can call Faria tech support & ask. They also repair gauges.

Impeller Question with Rabbit Ears On

Impeller life seems more a function of the water you’re in, not salt or fresh but shallow/Sandy bottom vs deep water and also care when loading on & off trailer that you don’t tilt too high. I think the longest I went was 5 years. Cobra impeller very easy to do; don’t have to split the drive…it...

Impeller Question with Rabbit Ears On

Not necessarily The muffs force water in under pressure The true test is if the impeller can move water when the boat is in the water. On mine I usually run the impeller 3 seasons or so. With a 160 stat my running temps are about 160-170.

2000 5.0 GL intermittent slow acceleration

Are you sure the electric choke is opening & staying open? These need a steady source of 12v to stay open or else they close!

Inspection cameras also help. I feel your pain 22 years of owning & maintaining an I/O. Next boat has to be outboard powered. Expensive but better in a number of ways. Actually if boat companies would make different decisions they wouldn’t be such a nightmare to work on. I changed the rear...

4.3 LX water in the oil...

That sounds great! On mine whenever I've done the compression tests it is usually between 160 and 170.

4.3L mercruiser with points. Timing question.

Well all I can say is I have had the points set up for over 20 years and even though the total advance is a lot lower than what was specified for the V8, the engine has performed well given that it's a small engine in a pretty heavy 20' boat. It easily planes out the boat, top speed is low...

That's one of the big issues with I/Os, there are a number of places where they can leak water with the bellows being only one of them. Bellows rear steering arm seal transom seal Y pipe Y pipe seal and corrosion in the transom mount as well as rot in the actual transom One of my habits is to...

2000 5.0 GL intermittent slow acceleration

You must have the Prestolite BID which is basically the same as their points distributor except with an electronic module instead of points. I think the GM/Delco EST was all electronic. The old GM HEI used back in the '70s and 80s had an electronic module but used a combination of centrifugal...

Just thought I'd share a nice photo.

Entrance to Lloyd Harbor Long Island, a relative of mine lives there. Not far from my house. When they say no wake they're not kidding!

4.3L mercruiser with points. Timing question.

You will find the block casting on the bellhousing area behind the cyl head. Here's mine I touched it up in MS paint to make it easier to read. So mine's an 011 block, 1987-1992, one piece rear main, roller lifter cam, pre-Vortec heads, no balance shaft.

4.3L mercruiser with points. Timing question.

Nope the Mercruiser 4.5 V6 is “theirs” but look at the parts diagrams there’s an awful lot of similarities! Only the cyl heads look a bit different and of course the ignition and fuel system.

4.3L mercruiser with points. Timing question.

Interesting that Mercruiser’s “own” inboard V6 really looks like a warmed over old GM 4.3. Same 90* block, same split journal crankshaft, same style balance shaft etc if you look at Merc parts diagrams. Makes you wonder if they just bought the tooling from GM & then made some updates &...

4.3L mercruiser with points. Timing question.

Also that info about the 4.3 being an uneven firing engine was confusing to me. Yes the first GM V6s were odd firing due to the 90* angle between the cyls whereas 60* would have been perfect for a V6. Supposedly the “even fire” crankshaft with the split journals corrected this but maybe not...

4.3L mercruiser with points. Timing question.

Been trying to figure this out for years. OMC used the same engine & same points distributor yet initial timing was set at 6* and centrifugal advance was 12* for a total of only 18*. It never made sense to me that the V6 should have so much less advance than the V8.

2000 5.0 GL intermittent slow acceleration

Probably not on a 2000 model year. They used the Prestolite BID electronic and the GM EST. A GL model should be a carb I think. Prob a 2 bbl or 4 bbl Holley

    Shearing starter bolts 2005 5.0

As stated could be a hydrolock if you stopped fast pull spark plugs crank engine over if water shoots out of plug holes that's it Otherwise, starter bolts too long or not tightened enough. If you do your own starter you have to make sure the bolts aren't too long, and also another thing make...

    Need to vent....

This is one big reason I kept my simple old boat with the points distributor and 4 bbl carb…no EPA approved nonsense no electronic mystery boxes no CANBUS wiring no evaporative emissions to clog up. Elegantly simple the only requirement is that the owner has auto shop 101 skills circa 1970. If...

    Volvo Penta 7.4 Gi

The other thing to check is if ignition parts (modules) and EFI parts are available if it’s a fuel injected engine. These parts sometimes get discontinued on engines that old. Carbs are easier to deal with because parts are easy to find.
