Overheating at idle, cool as a cucumber at speed

Ok here I am trying to jam it up there and it's just going absolutely nowhere:

Overheating at idle, cool as a cucumber at speed

Ok I replaced the impeller and I'm trying to reinstall the lower unit, but I can't get it in there. I slide the axle up and it gets to around 3/4" to 1" up and it won't go up any further. It sounds like a very solid metal on solid metal sound. I've tried tapping it, shaking it, i've tried...

LOL apparently it's in the photo I posted above haha.

Whether it's the cause of the problem or not, that kink bothers me so I'd like to replace that hose. What kind of hose is it? Should be cheap enough right? Also where is the thermostat on my motor? I've seen videos of removing it on newer engines. Should be easy enough to pop it out and see if...

Overheating at idle, cool as a cucumber at speed

Finally had a few hours to work on this again today. I got the new gaskets on there on either side of the plate, got the new impeller and housing bolted up, the lower unit is ready to be thrown back on the boat. But I couldn't do THAT because it started raining. I did get out there with an...

Overheating at idle, cool as a cucumber at speed

Hmm, neither of the replacement gaskets I got have a sealer bead on it. Is that going to be an issue? Also I'll try lifting up and spinning next time I'm working on it, just to see. I'm hoping I can get at least another 10 years out of this 39 year old boat :D

Overheating at idle, cool as a cucumber at speed

Bummer. Ok one more part on order. New, related question. The motor was in neutral when I took the lower unit off. When I turn the main drive shaft by hand, the propeller does not spin (as expected). But the rotation is not smooth. It feels pretty rough. Is that normal? If there are bearings in...

Overheating at idle, cool as a cucumber at speed

Ok I got the new gasket that goes between the plate and the impeller housing. I was scraping off the old one, which seemed to be some form of "liquid gasket" on top of an older real gasket. So after some scraping, I decided I'd just pull the plate off to make it easier. Once I did that, there...

Overheating at idle, cool as a cucumber at speed

I took a closer look today and it looks like the last person to replace this used gasket caulking or whatever it might be called. But it's peeling off so I agree I should replace it with a new, real gasket. Can you get JUST the gasket? Anyone know THAT part number?

I found my original part number on that site but I didn't see anything about a replacement number. *shrug*

So how did you get that number? Also when I search West Marine, I get no results. I think that's the only boat shop around here.

Overheating at idle, cool as a cucumber at speed

Disregard my last message, I found it on boats.net so it's on its way. So I figure I'll replace the impeller, fire up the engine with the water ear plugs on it and see if it gets hot, and then just poke around. I wonder if the exit plug is partially clogged, because I've had that happen before...

Overheating at idle, cool as a cucumber at speed

Ok new problem. Even though my impeller looks fine, I have it all open so I might as well replace it anyway, it is years old. But everywhere I look, this part is no longer made and not in stock ( 430261 ) Is there an updated part number? Is there a better way to look this up than by engine...

Overheating at idle, cool as a cucumber at speed

Oops I forgot to attach the pictures. Pic #1 Does this plastic washer thing go on the little geared spline to the front of the main shaft? Looks like it does but I didn't see where it actually fell from Pic #2 Honestly that looks basically perfect to me. I know on here, people often say you...

    Dust Cap Woes

Can you show me what you mean because I don't get exactly where you're saying to punch it?

Overheating at idle, cool as a cucumber at speed

So today was interesting. I removed the lower unit for the first time ever. That wasn't bad at all. I mean it's the first time *I* removed it, not the first time it's BEEN removed. So it came off nice and easy, I took it into my basement and took apart the pump cover and MUCH TO MY SURPRISE...

    Dust Cap Woes

I know exactly what you mean, I have a few of those in my basement in a spot where there used to be a bathroom. I don't think they will work though, like you said they have no hollow part so they'd hit the lock nut on the hub and I don't think you'd even be able to install it.

    Dust Cap Woes

What exactly is a bearing buddy? Are they just dust caps with a grease fitting on top or is there more to them than that? Do they press fit in just like normal caps? Cause with more weight and the same attachment, it seems like they would fall off even easier?

    Dust Cap Woes

I hear you. However...... 1) Pins seem normal, they're not touching the caps at all. 2) They are the right size and I bought multiple packs from different popular brand auto stores around. They all are nearly impossible to install and then shortly thereafter, eject themselves while driving...

Overheating at idle, cool as a cucumber at speed

Hmmmm ok, given that, I guess it can't hurt to have the compressor on hand. Is it going to be obvious by looking where the water pathways are once the lower unit is removed? Also, I was driving in some notoriously weedy river water at the time this started, so it's entirely possible something...
