    Water in my lenses

I drilled a tiny hole, much smaller than 1/4". The water is slowly dripping out. This should work, it should all drip out eventually. And the hole is so small, and on the bottom, so it should be very hard for new water to get in through that hole next time the trailer is underwater. That said...

    Surging Mercury (with audio)

Nope I have never taken the carbs off, though I'm going to try to soon. I think my carbs need a rebuild even if I ALSO have some other issues going on. So here's a picture of my spark plugs. They don't look too bad, but they do look surprisingly dirty. And wet, which is weird since I ran the...

    Surging Mercury (with audio)

Would any of those problems - poor compression, poor spark, poor ignition, go away at high rpms? I'm going to be packing it up later today, I'll at least take a look at the plugs and see if they're in bad shape. I think they were good last time I checked. For the rest, it might have to wait...

    Surging Mercury (with audio)

In a previous post, I figured out that my oil leak was coming from my carbs, not a leaky oil line. The consensus was that fuel was leaking in to the carb, evaporating, and slowly filling the bowls with oil. Since figuring this out, I've been disconnecting the fuel line when I'm done boating...

Overheating at idle, cool as a cucumber at speed

Good thing I reverse image searched that image, I was looking for an original photo I could reuse, not someone elses image grabbed off amazon. Oh well I'll just go to west marine and snap a picture.

    Water in my lenses

Ok so 2 or 3 years ago, I bought new lights (2 brake lights, 2 amber markers) and a full wiring harness and I fully re-did my trailer. Including soldering all connections, greasing them, and heat shrinking. AND I did full ground wires, no grounding to body. I wanted to never have problems with...

Overheating at idle, cool as a cucumber at speed

Hey guys, ressurecting this post to ask for a favor. I'm changing up the thumbnails for all my 'how to' type videos. For that, I need a photo of one of these impellers. Does anyone have one they can take a photo of for me? Ideally on a white or white-ish background. In or out of the packaging...

    Retractable Stern Light

YES thats the one! Innovative Lighting was actually my first guess, but I couldn't find the light on their website, or anything similar to it, so I figured it must be something else!

    Retractable Stern Light

I installed this really nice retractable stern light on my boat some 14 or so years ago. It extends manually like a fat radio antenna, with a 2NM LED at the top. Its super handy because it's always there when you need it but its never in the way. So one thing lead to another (not really) and I...

    Dust Cap Woes

Update: This is crazy, but I think the welding worked! I just tacked each cap on in two spots. I drove all the way to the boat ramp and all the way home. Which is only about 8 miles each way (16 total). But previously, both caps would start to back out after just ONE mile. AND both hubs were...

    Dust Cap Woes

So tonight I tack-welded the caps on! It felt like an absurd thing to be doing. HOWEVER when I was done, I went for a 5.5 mile test drive and when I was done, the caps were all still on tight. And I did touch both hubs, they were barely warm. Remember that last time I went for a boat ride...

    Dust Cap Woes

The grease I used is some marine grease that is specifically rated for use in trailer axles among other things. And I'm sure theres water in there now, the cap ejected wednesday night and it rained thursday morning. And regarding the measurements, I agree using a ruler isn't super accurate...

    Dust Cap Woes

I was measuring the I.D. of the hub last night to confirm the size. Theres a lot of perspective here because the camera was so close so it looks like its much less than 2" but its actually right around 2". Yes there are just simple metal caps, no fittings or anything. They pop right off. I...

    Dust Cap Woes

Both hubs are freshly re-tightened just right so they spin freely but have zero rattle in them. No trailer brakes, I drove 1 mile on smooth back roads where the fastest I was going would have been 25 to 30 MPH and both sides had partially backed out in that distance. I made sure they were...

    Dust Cap Woes

Its definitely not too much grease, you can tell just by looking, its not jammed in there. There are no grease fittings on these hubs so I just squeeze a bunch of it in there. But theres plenty of air space.

    Dust Cap Woes

So if I were somehow packing the hubs wrong, what possible "wrong" ways to do it could cause this? Too little grease? Too much grease? Those are the only two options I can think of really.

    Dust Cap Woes

Where can I get rubber ones? I'm ready to use rubber ones and a pair of hose clamps at this point, and then in a few years I'll replace the axle and hubs with something nice and new. But this is madness.

    Dust Cap Woes

First boat ride of the year today. I got everything ready, and right before I hit the road, I got a rubber mallet and tapped both caps on nice and tight. I hopped in and started driving. I stopped exactly 1 mile down the road. These are suburban roads so the speeds were probably 30 mph tops...

    Old 2-Cycle Mercury Oil Leak

Ok so I'm thinking I might take the carbs off and try to rebuild them myself, but this also really feels like a Winter project. In the meantime, I went for my first ride today and it took a LONG time to get the motor running. It would die at low RPMs. So I could start it with a little throttle...

    Old 2-Cycle Mercury Oil Leak

If its also smokier than normal at low speed, is that also an indicator that its the float valves?
