1996 Four Winns Sundowner with 5.0 Cobra engine and drive

There was a service bulletin released to remove the flappers. My '95 didn't have them when I got the boat seven years ago.

    Reliable sure lube hubs

Correct. With Sure Lube, the grease comes out inboard of the brake backing plate or goes into the axle. I believe it comes out of a hole inboard of the brake backing plate on dropped axles. At least it does on mine. Some folks on this thread are confusing Sure Lube with EZ Lube. They are...

Help with OMC/Volvo 3868156 joint venture outdrive shift cable please

As long as the tube sealed at the transom, it's a solid design. I haven't heard of that seal failing. A failed or improperly installed bellows will allow water into the boat. I say it's time to go boating.

Help with OMC/Volvo 3868156 joint venture outdrive shift cable please

In the engine bay is a tube sealed at the transom that extends up above the water line that the cable and housing run through. Are you still having leakage after the bellows replacement?

    Warning lights on dash.

Many times idiot lights are driven by separate switches and not powered by the gauge sensors.

Can I put a cobra sx prop on a Volvo sx

Yes. If yours is an SX-M, they are actually the same drives with different labels. I suspect it would fit an SX-A drive also.

1996 Four Winns Sundowner with 5.0 Cobra engine and drive

Being a '96, a joint venture year, it's basically a Volvo SX-M drive. When my EFI Ford 302 needs replacement, I'll have to investigate the GM route you suggest.

    Sure Lube Spindle issues.

I've always done regular annual maintenance also. I never was able to get the plastic cap with the zerk to keep the water out. I frankly wish I didn't have this spindle, but it's not worth replacing my 6K axle to get rid of it.

    Hub/rotor won’t fit properly - thoughts?

I can't answer your question, but the sealing surface looks terrible, even in the original location. I would be surprised if that will keep water out. However you resolve the brake issue, I would put a speedi-sleeve on there so the seal has a smooth surface to ride on. Was internal corrosion...

Extra cost(s) breakdown of storing boat in a saltwater marina?

I have a trailer boat and a boat in a slip. In addition to above, expect to replace the anodes twice as often, if not more, when stored in salt water. I replace our outdrive anodes every four months. If the boat has an IO, I suggest installing a Neutra Salt flushing system to slow the internal...

    Frustrated with shift/throttle

Now that it's working I would just run it. I would confirm though that with the cover off it shifts all the way into F and R from the helm. If not, adjust the nut on the end of the cable at the drive end until it does. I would also look at the shift cable routing to confirm there are no sharp...

    Sure Lube Spindle issues.

I have Reliable Sure Lube hubs on my '95 Calkins trailer and I had to add Speedi-sleeves to them and ended up with the same issue. The Speedi-sleeve mostly covers the hole between the inner bearing and rear seal that allows the grease to exit inboard of the brake backing plate. I can barely...

    Volvo Penta 5.0FIPNCSCE SLOW mode

Try grounding the oil pressure switch (breaker) connector to ground and see if you can get above 2500 rpm smoothly. It sounds like it's something else. Can you use a portable fuel tank of fresh fuel?

    Volvo Penta 5.0FIPNCSCE SLOW mode

The SLOW system uses separate temperature and pressure SWITCHES that are independent from the sensors (senders) that go to the gauges. I suspect the breaker is the switch. I believe the switches are normally closed (ECM sees ground) during normal operating conditions, but I'm not sure. If you...

    Steering Actuator P/N

21910902 is apparently the replacement part number for 3858128, so order the newer part.

    Steering Actuator P/N

The actuator is the 385 number. The other is likely a subcomponent housing part.

    SX-C1: gaskets when doing bellows/gimbal?

The only seals that need replacing when pulling the drive and replacing those parts mentioned is number 88 and the O-rings for the drain plug, overflow port, and dipstick. As preventative maintenance, you may want to replace 13, 14, & 15 as these can crack and create air leaks into the raw...

Exhaust Manifold and Riser - HOT

I would get a $25 IR temp gun and measure it. Mine never get much above 120F. If either of yours are much more than that, I would pull the riser and see how much corrosion exists. Last year mine went quickly from mildly warmer to so hot I could smell the large rubber hose smoking on a WOT...

    When does anode require replacement?

Make sure the anodes are well bonded, electrically, to the drive. Them not getting smaller is a potential sign they aren't bonded well to the drive.
