1996 Four Winns Sundowner with 5.0 Cobra engine and drive

PS That Boss 302, well one of my best friends dad was a chief mechanic at our local Ford dealer. He & I checked out a brand new 1969 Boss 302 in the showroom it was $4600 USD on the sticker. June 1969. Just finished 8th grade summer of the moon landing & Woodstock! Same color combination! What’s...

    My 84 4winns horizon 195 project.

I forgot does yours have the balance shaft or not? The pre balance shaft units came with pretty soft front engine mounts I know on mine if you watch closely you can actually see a slight up n down movement at idle speed. Even with the “even fire” crankshaft….

1996 Four Winns Sundowner with 5.0 Cobra engine and drive

Temp & burning smell Check your manifold, elbow & rubber exhaust hose temps at idle and after running on plane. I have basically the same style exhaust but with a different impeller design. Idle : 90-100* F barely warm After coming off plane: 135-140… Engine temp: (w/160* thermostat) 160-165...

Check the engine mounts; could the engine be shifting slightly under torque?

1996 Four Winns Sundowner with 5.0 Cobra engine and drive

Love the Mustang. That’s a modern interpretation of the 1969-1970 Boss 302 that was sold to make it legal for Trans Am racing. I agree you should be about to run WOT without overheating

    My 84 4winns horizon 195 project.

Wow what a great job and so glad the pix are working again so we can see the finished product. About the noise I wonder if it’s the exhaust flappers; when I changed my exhaust from the one piece batwings to the 2 piece conventional exhaust the flappers did make a bit more noise at times which...

OMC cobra new long block back firing when first starting

Or one of the intake valves is too tight and staying open allowing the flame front to travel back to the intake manifold

    Coil Question

Here’s mine. 36 years old on the salt water mooring behind my house. Main thing is keeping the birds off it hence the 3 spinners and fake scary cat!

    Coil Question

I tired to post a pic of the BID wiring diagram of that’s what’s on the boat….

    Coil Question

Also I did a bit of searching around, and if that engine has the same ignition system that both OMC and Volvo used in the '94 year, it is probably a Prestolite BID system which is basically an update of the old points distributor, keeping the centrifugal advance under the points plate but...

    Coil Question

Cole-Hersee makes good quality switches, better than what typically comes with consumer grade boats.

    Coil Question

Normally the R terminal is used on a points style ignition to provide full battery voltage to the coil only when the engine is cranking/starting, after the solenoid disengages the ignition coil is powered via the resistor wire that lowers the voltage to about 9 volts to keep the points from...

Very difficult to shift into Neutral

Yep that’s a good test. Make sure you’re running only on the idle system. If you turn the idle mix screws all the way in (gently) it should kill the engine. If not your throttle places are too far open, and you’re also running on the off idle or transition system.

Very difficult to shift into Neutral

I have found that I get a smoother running engine if I readjust the idle speed & mixture with the boat in the water; I feel the back pressure of the water against the exhaust makes a difference….550-600 in gear is ideal for dog clutch shifting

    4.3 vortec Mercruiser..lots of questions

If you do a search on this forum people have posted up on how to air pressure test the cooling system passages, you need some hose & adapters and a small air compressor. These engines are actually quite rugged and simple to repair but the one Achilles heel of them is raw water cooling. If left...

    Coil Question

PS if you can't find a VP wiring schematic for your engine, seeing as how you have a '94, that is the 1st year of the joint venture years between VP and OMC, so an OMC schematic for the same year, would likely be the same.

    Coil Question

Well what you need is a proper VP wiring diagram for your model, but lacking that, here's what I might do: Remove the retainer for the igntion switch and see if you can rig it up to operate outside of the dashboard, so you can get to the terminals with a test light. Then do some basic tests on...

Very difficult to shift into Neutral

Those tools are the only way to get it right esp with Rochester carbs that have the idle mix screws under the float bowl. The Holley and Edelbrock designs are easier to get at.

Very difficult to shift into Neutral

Don't have merc experience but I know with the Cobra dog clutch, if the idle is up that high, the ESA system can't lower it enough to have an easy shift to neutral. I keep mine between 550-600 in gear in the water, that equates to 625 or so in neutral in the water, and it shifts with 2 finger...
