    4.3 vortec Mercruiser..lots of questions

before putting tons of money into it, what kind of condition is the rest of the boat? If it's an 18' or so, stick with the 4.3, 20' and over, V8 conversion makes sense if you need a new motor. I thought of doing that on mine too but was able to get by with a top end overhaul, didn't have to pull...

    The End

Here people with I/Os start pulling them 2nd to last week of Oct, the outboards stay in longer. Usually I'm out by Halloween and winterized soon thereafter.

Thats all for this year folks, time to hibernate this beast.....

Ok for the P/S cooler the way I’ve done it instead of trying to reach that impossible to get at drain plug (did that the 1st 2 years) is this: Put the outdrive all the way down Disconnect the raw water intake hose at the thermostat housing (86-93) or impeller (94 & up). Hole the hose down to...

    5.0 oil weight and amount

Yep Wix is good, you could also use an AC Delco or Purolator. BTW check your access on this job it can be tough to get at. A cap style wrench makes the job easier if it fits right…

AI isn’t that smart lol; they mixed in the neutral safety switch which is mounted on the remote control with the interrupt switch! One has nothing to do with the other. What I read was that they encorporated a timer into the ESA module and eliminated the overstroke switch; yet yours has 2 switches!

    Trim cylinder hose replacement

Ah so Merc used a flare like a brake line then, I might not use sealer in that case. If you have the cylinder off & there’s no fluid in it heat the alu part where the threads are and put some ice on the cap itself for a few min…that might break it free…

    Trim cylinder hose replacement

Also forgot to mention; depending on the trim pump you have you may have to raise the trim all the way up before removing the fill plug. Not sure if Merc used the same or similar pump to OMC but that’s how mine is for sure; says it in both the shop manual & owners manual…if you don’t hydraulic...

    Trim cylinder hose replacement

I have not done an Alpha but on the Volvo/OMC units the seal is made with an O ring on the trim hose metal end so you could use sealer on the threads of the fittings without it getting into the hydraulic oil…

    Trim cylinder hose replacement

When I had a leaky trim cyl I was going to replace my originals with good condition used units from fresh water but I had the same problem one of the hydraulic fittings would not budge. So I backed away from it and thought it over. My original cyls were still in OK shape. If I could get the end...

Manifolds (Trying to figure out what I am looking at)

Ok thanks I’ll take a look under there when I change the oil this fall but I don’t think I can bend my 68 year old self into that space well enough to do a good job of it!

Manifolds (Trying to figure out what I am looking at)

Hey I just thought of another question for you; you have a remote oil filter mount correct? Did you replace the bypass valve with a higher PSI one to keep the oil from bypassing the filter or is it the standard one (11 psi?). I know some of the truck blocks came with remote oil filter mounts so...

4.3/190 hp Chevy Vortec engine with Volvo drive on Glastron GX185 boat

To me it seems the main causes are: Not winterizing promptly Running over propped—engine doesn’t turn up max RPM Leaving bad exhaust on it and rusting exhaust valves & seats or even a hydrolock Ignoring warning signs like mild overheating or the first signs of water in the oil Not doing required...

Manifolds (Trying to figure out what I am looking at)

Interesting difference between the Merc and my OMC/Volvo style exhaust. Those run at 95-100* at idle & the hottest they get is about 135/140 after coming off plane. Do you have the warm manifold set up or the cold manifold set up? I’m guessing the former. I recall that Merc came up with that set...

1993 OMC 5.8 EFI and drive system conversion to Volvo Penta

https://www.outboardbooks.com/index.cfm OK found the link I was looking for, this is for factory OMC manuals, they may not have your exact model number but if you call them you might be able to get a manual that is close enough, and if you look at what's available, they also do have...

1993 OMC 5.8 EFI and drive system conversion to Volvo Penta

Well the only thing I have as far as that goes, is the wiring diagrams for the original style ESA which was actually part of the ignition system. So I don't think what I have is going relate to how yours should work, but I still think the interrupter should not activate with the drive in gear...

    Another Winterization Thread!

You'll get many different opinions on this, Mercruiser has recommended filling the seawater side of the system with AF for quite a while. I have always done it being in salt water trying to minimize the internal corrosion, I can tell it works to an extent by watching the exhaust water when I...
