Stumbling at Cruising Speed - OMC 5.8L

Ground the coil secondary wire and turn the engine over with the ignition switch on. Observe dwell reading and adjust accordingly. Once it's all back together and running check dwell again. If it's in spec, great. If not adjust accordingly until correct then set the idle timing to spec

Mounting a gen 1 alpha to a gen 2 housing.

Ive never attempted this but I'd be leery of an alpha 1 drive mounted to a gen ii bell housing. As stated you'd need swap at least the shift shaft. Might work but I wouldn't trust it for long If I had the parts and time I'd try an alpha 1 bell housing in place of the gen ii. Still wonky but...

help a mercruiser boy figure which volvo drive is needed.

You'd be best with any late model A series DPS drive and transom assy. Only issue I see could be flywheel housing/rear mounts may be different from the X to the A inner transom plate. Kinda doubt volvo would get that specific but you never know, might just install fine The older M series drives...

4.3gi no start new ICM. how to set base timing?

If you're sure the distributor is installed correctly you could try rotating it one way or the other to see of it will fire/run If that doesn't work you'll need to verify tdc #1 compression with #1 spark plug removed Firing order 1-6-5-4-3-2

    AlphaOne Gen2 large gasket install

I use a small drop of bellows adhesive at 12, 3, 6 and 9 o'clock positions on the o.d. of the quad ring As stated this is to merely hold the ring in place, not aid in sealing. Too much adhesive can cause issues with fit/sealing plus makes cleanup at service more difficult Grease is fine to use...

    High idle

Yes, pcv line, sorry for typo The engine cannot go full throttle without the throttle plate fully open. Verify how far the throttle plate is open first. Maybe something is bent or broken, this is for you to determine. Until then everything is just a guess Doesn't take much air for the engine...

    High idle

Have you verified the throttle plate is wide open? If it is, something may be broken between the throttle arm and throttle plate shaft If it is closed there's a vacuum leak somewhere. First thought is pvc line disconnected

2000 Volvo Penta 5.7 Gfi with no spark

That could very well be the issue all along. That is the main 12v supply for the engine harness/ecm. Sure you may have been seeing voltage throughout the harness but probably not good, clean voltage. Corrosion chews up amperage quickly and seeing rust at the main reset/breaker is not good

Stern Drive transom lower right bolt fell out

It'll be tough to access the inside area to properly reinstall the through bolt. As stated engine removal is necessary to complete the task efficiently I would also be concerned as to why the bolt is missing. First thought is that the bolt itself corroded to the point of failure. Have seen this...

    1976 888 Fuel Questions

You can test the exhaust cooling passages for flow with a garden hose attached at various points and following the flow indicated in the diagram with arrows. If little or no flow there's most Iikely a blockage somewhere, if good flow there may be an issue with water supply from the impeller or...

You don't need fancy tools to rebuild a carburetor. Just the right tools, a proper quality rebuilt kit and the correct info for the procedure There's no need to buy a new/reman carburetor. If you're unsure of your ability to rebuild the carburetor have a shop do it for you It's in your best...

    Wiper arm grommet/seal

I think life seal is preferable to sika for your situation. If the motor/shaft assy is properly mounted there's no need for anything heavy like sika, not much if any force exerted where the shaft passes through the deck Can't really see any difference good or bad with a rubber washer along...

    Yamaha 704 binnacle remote question

Would imagine cost difference between the two and manufacturers design/layout concerning safety features may not warrant a release on the control. They have less chance of accidental engagement as compared to side/panel mount controls Yamaha isn't the only manufacturer to produce a single lever...

    OMC or Yamaha

I understand the latest production Gen VI/L29 454/7.4L is the most desirable for torque/hp but what advantages does a Gen IV (1970-1990) have over a Gen V (1991-1995)? Gonna guess beefier casting? More durable/heat tolerable heads/combustion chambers?

Thinner for bottom paint, what to use??

As mentioned earlier it's not a good idea to just use what you think may work as a good thinner. Oil based paints use many different types of chemicals and often times require a specific thinner/additive to avoid any unwanted chemical reactions that can result in disaster The company that...
