87 50HP VRO Evinrude - Could this be my problem?

that rectifier will absolutely get damaged with that lipo battery IMO. lead acid only. how does the tach work smoothly? those delicate diodes in the rectifier dont like that. you can get the maintenance free upgraded CDI rectifier (regulated) for about $120 then you can technically use cheap...

87 50HP VRO Evinrude - Could this be my problem?

those suggestions for setting the throttle cable are critical, and DEAD WRONG here if you have the common side mount control box. its set in FORWARD detent and the lash is pulled out then set the thumbwheel adjusted to trunnion pocket making sure the slow speed screw is FIRMLY against the block...

1978 Johnson 140hp running rough. Need advice

agreed. problem is these crossflows run hot/lean in the midrange. those thick piston crows soak up a LOT of heat!

1995 Johnson 150 shuts down after 5 minutes of full throttle

the vapor separator pump... when running, pull its recirc hose out of its hole in the air silencer up top (it is in the hole, right?) you should easily feel it pulsing air . if ts very weak or nothing, simply remove the hoses to the pump, unscrew it from the separator cover, mark it with a paint...

1978 Johnson 140hp running rough. Need advice

for most engines thats very true, but not with these specific crossflow V motors! the heavy piston crowns soak up a lot of heat. add the other reasons I listed above and premium fuel is absolutely the logical/better choice. And no, it doesnt reduce power. if anything it increases it.

1978 Johnson 140hp running rough. Need advice

I would be planning on a rebuild as Racer said... 100-110psi is too low. those 78' 140's had very tight heads unless someone replaced them for crappy fuel. im sure it will run for quite a while so if thats all your after no worries, but it would be a different motor once properly bored and...

1988 Johnson 70hp - VRO or not to VRO?

the VRO/OMS pumps are extremely easy to test. you dont even need to remove it from the motor! Just need to remove the fuel out hose, and pulse hose. its a simple series of pressure/vacuum tests as clearly charted out in the service manual. that way there is no guessing "hmm maybe ill replace it...

    Attempting a motor rebuild

sounds like you found a shop with a big fancy CNC machine thats set up for boring auto engine blocks. the absurd price is because it will take the guy a while to re-calibrate and set up the machine for your little tohatsu. flagship marine in punta gorda, FL is $35/hole finished.

    Attempting a motor rebuild

the ring side-clearance tolerance in the piston is a whopping .004''. can you measure this with a feeler and get back to us? personally im not puttng a motor toghether with even .003'' but thats just me. the side effects include fun things like the motor feeling like its tied to a stump out of...

    Mounting Bolt Compression of Transom

this is an older post, but just an FYI OMC made an EXCELLENT rigging guide! thats why its not in your service manual. they are almost always seperate rigging guides for most manufacturers. 40 ft/lbs no more no less on the transom screws. a jackplate to motor screw should be 80-90 ft/lbs...

    J90ELEDR Cooling Concerns

how are you checking head temp? that alarm will go off right around 240f, which prompts me to swap the tan/blue sensors with the earlier solid tan ones as they will trip around 200f, thus giving you more of a cushion before its too late. anyway, see the cast-in flat spots at the top of each...

1998 evinrude 225 ocean pro, no spark! Help!

again there is NO GUESSWORK here! A $25 DVA adapter for your meter and some jumper leads to make it seamless is all you need. just follow the ignition test instructions in your factory service manual. as mentioned you need 250rpm for a good spark so try to start it 1st with the new pack. might...

honestly id get a better gauge and/or borescope the cylinders at this juncture. id have the powerhead off, exhaust covers and heads off to do a thorough inspection of cylinders/pistons/rings and put the upgraded engine holder with loctited lower crank seal and upgraded 1 piece exhaust covers...

    79’ Evinrude 70 Bogging

how are you determining its running lean? a few drops of fuel into each carb throat. if it picks up rpm, its running lean. if its sneezing, those carb plates might be stuck open a hair or the spring for the throttle shaft isnt wrapped around it to put tension on them.

    2 Cylinder Johnson 40hp Old Trim/Tilt

they had this adapter kit up through 1988 for the 2 cyl loopers. it was really kind of a lemon design IMO. better to get a CMC model 130. whole thing would rust out and just almost never work correctly. obviously a big reason for the 1989 re-design was because OMC needed a clean and light...
