Crank driven vs block mounted raw water pump pros/cons

Hey, back to this cooling system again. Trying to decide placement of this ~ 1 1/4 maralon thru hull pickup for the F6B9 pump to draw from. It is a 25 foot riveted Starcraft aluminum hull with cabin but still fairly light with a single 5.0 V8 mercruiser 188 motor. I have the sea strainer inbound...

    Frogs, Lizards and Wasps

Whoah, 2 feet! I thought they only went just past the surface. I need to put an end to my carpenter bees too apparently then for sure. The bees have been extra bad this year in RI. Stung in the face doing an AC install this past Friday. No warning, right to stinging. The bastards are extra...

    1974 Chieftain 25 "Adventurer" Restoration

Got the starboard 60 gallon tank back in and securely strapped in place, hopefully will get the port tank in this evening maybe. Had to use 90° preformed elbows on the filler pipe but it all came together just great. Will be time to do more exciting things like the engine bay and reassemble the...

    1974 Chieftain 25 "Adventurer" Restoration

Been insanely hot at work lately, harder to work on boat after hours so not a ton of progress the last few days but did get water system to 100% the other night. New galley sprayer faucet for the admiral and the sink in the head works great. Tried to post pics but it isn't working again.

Thanks, it's been quite the long project. Hoping the pictures might help someone else someday maybe. "Don't do it like this" 😆

Windshield predictably was a pain but it's back on there finally as of today. Test fit to trace alignment before drilling Glued and screwed

    1974 Chieftain 25 "Adventurer" Restoration

5/8 marine ply roof replacement bolted down last night. Think I'm going to keep the cabinets out, at least for now. It's so roomy without them, way more head space. Still have loads of storage space available. Plus now I've got room for a nice porthole in the galley! This boat is a lot of fun to...

    1974 Chieftain 25 "Adventurer" Restoration

Serious delay- had to cut roof out bc of defective plywood issue. Prob better I'm replacing this particular piece with marine ply anyway. Piece I removed was delaminating and swelling like crazy, despite being painted and sealed, thoroughly messing up my windshield reinstall. If you ever feel...

    Transom replacement 1975 18' SS

Splashwell cracks can form from the transom being too flexible/soft. Once replaced it is still a reinforcement but not required usually. I would put the splash well back on using 2 or 3 5/32 or so SS through bolts with lock washers to start if it is warped at all which it easily could be a...

    Transom replacement 1975 18' SS

Great project!! I always wanted the bigger SS 18, absolutely loved my SS 16 all the way till the end, RIP. Yeah, don't let the project spook you or slow you down. The transom is a 'big deal' but like said above, it really is just 1 weekend of focused work. I cut and installed mine in my 25 foot...

The new 'spun silver' Faria gauges came in. I really like the look of these poking through my seabees crate console.

Platform feels pretty solid. Still need to figure how I'm going to mount the kicker motor bracket back there and the additional bracing for it. Looks like another trip to scavenge the scrapyard is in order.

    1974 Chieftain 25 "Adventurer" Restoration

Thanks, trying not to get lost in the details and just keep the project moving ahead. And it's funny you say that about the white paint job showing issues more easily bc that is a big part of my lighter color reasoning! The all black is definitely pretty great for hiding issues.. Seems more like...

1983 Starcraft Rivet Work of Art

That rivet job really is something. If that's the worst then she's definitely saveable without too crazy much effort like the guys above said. Aluminum is pretty easy to work with and done half right it holds up a long time. The rivets they did were definitely a good bit less than half right 😅...
