I was getting really bad pump whine the other day. Pulled the regulator out, cleaned off the gunk and it seemed to fix the problem for about 2 hours. Got back to the dock and the pump started whining pretty hard at low rpm and idle. Replace the whole assembly or just the high/low pressure pump?

You can try disconnecting the wires connected to each pump in order with the engine running. That will reveal which pump is bad. The HP pump is easily replacable, replacing the LP pump requires disassembling the fuel cell.

That's how mine sounded. I did some research and found about the dreaded Volvo black powder coat on the inside of the fuel cells. Troy at ManCaveMechanic was a great help and has built a business replacing the fuel cells with cells that don't have the coating. I replaced mine year before last and it has run great with no whine. The whining is just annoying, the real problems and expense come in if the black specks get into a fuel injector, then you have major problems, possibly even a blown engine.
