88 110 evinrude vro v4

Hi all, I recently acquired an 86 glastron hpv with an 88 evinrude 110 on the back, all was well at first, but on the test runs it will get up and run on plane for 10-15 seconds after getting on plane and then the engine dies, any idea of what this could be or what to look for? I’m an auto mechanic so the whole boat thing is a little foreign

Do a compression test. Was the waterpump serviced recently? Does it make a difference if you pump the primer ball?
