  • 220sx 5.7 efi - am I going to hate not getting the 350 mag

I've been looking for a used Stingray 220sx and found what I think is a decent deal on one in good condition locally.
I was after the 350 mag mpi, which this one was advertised as having, but upon opening the engine bay, it was a 5.7 efi alpha.

Its a decent deal, but more so logistically its easy and I cannot find any other options within a 10 hour drive.

Is the 350mag that much quicker an better that I should continue looking for?

I've owned the 5.7efi bravo 3 in a Rinker 270 cruiser and it was a fabulous combo for that application.

    Thoughts?

I wouldn't say the Mag is "better", but it will definitely be faster. Horsepower is horsepower. Doesn't Stingray post performance info?

      I've got a 220CX with 350 Mag, yeah, it's sweet !
With a Bravo 21p 4 blade SS prop, 2 people, full tank, top speed 65 mph with a GPS.
Mirage 21p 3 blade in SS with 4 people, near full tank, just yesterday did 57 GPS. Same 4 people 2 weeks ago with Bravo 4 blade did 54 MPH. I might try tomorrow with just the wife and I with the Mirage to see the difference.

Did you end up getting the 220sx? If so how she runs? I just picked up a 06 220sx with the 350 mag a couple of weeks ago. Took it out a few times running a 21p lazer II prop it will run mid to upper 60's with two people and a full tank.
Im looking for a good prop choice for pulling tubes and stuff. The 21 takes a while to get on step.. Would like something with more hole shot. I gonna keep the 21 for days I wont be pulling. I like the speed....

Sounds like you have some prop experience, our boats or close to the same. Do you do any pulling if so what prop you run and what kind of numbers you getting out of it.

        Any advice would be appreciated

I have to believe the z plane hull will make up for the fewer ponies.

But isn't this a question regarding the same hull with different powerplants?

Given that the OP has experience with the same engine mated to the Rinker hull, I would expect a similar sized Stingray hull to perform better. That's what I was trying to get at in the prior post.

                Sorry for the delay,

The 5.7efi performs well. I do wish I had the 350mag, but it is what it is.
Boat sturggles to plane if full of people, but otherwise 2 adults and 2 kids comes up on plane quick.
Speedo shows 60mph, 58ish is what I see on GPS.

Great on gas, and does exactly what I needed the boat to do

Maybe I am missing something here but both engines are 5.7L GM 350 blocks. Aren't they the same engine or is the MAG faster because it has multi point injection instead of just regular fuel injection?

The MAG is faster because it puts out more horsepower. It puts out more horsepower because it is tuned to do so, and that includes multi point. It also makes more horsepower so they can charge more for it... And they should. They sell horsepower. You want more, you pay more. Just the way it is.

In the truck engine biz you could have exactly the same iron make 355, 375, 425, 435, 455, 475, and even 500 bhp and the only difference is software. Again, they sell (and warrant) horsepower; not necessarily engine blocks

QC, I just put twin 5.7L 350 mag MPI engines in my boat. They each make 300 HP. How much horsepower does the 5.7L EFI put out?

I had a 1995 5.7 EFI (Throttle Body) and it was rated at 250 bhp propshaft. There have been other ratings too. Carbed 5.7s have been at 250 since then too.
