Re: 1965 Starcraft Cheiftain

Right, Gluvit for the bottom (rivets and seams) I wrote the post poorly, I meant it was the next step after sealing the floorboards.

Does anyone know how much Gluvit would be necessary to seal the area from the cabin wall back, aprox. 8ft.
Would one quart do it or should I go for the gallon?

Is this the type of expoy product you are reffering to? http://www.pridemarine.com/index.cfm?category=10060|10075|10696&product=9893375&code=810395005166

Also you say I can use the expoy without needing any glass matt? I would prefer that if possible.

Thanks again to all.

Nope... here's the proper link for gluvit quart --- http://www.pridemarine.com/index.cfm?category=10060|10075|10695&product=9896953&code=Gluvit Qt

1 quart was just able to do my 18' so it should be more than adequate for you.

I also used 1 qt on my 18 footer just on the rivits. Paid $42 at a local yard.

Re: 1965 Starcraft Cheiftain

i had all kinds of info for you
til i got to that last line.
i have the same issue....want offshore grade seats but don't want to spend >cost of boat. best compromise i've seen is the molded-plastic-back helm seats from Tempress, Wise and others....still >$200 each tho, without pedestal/hdwe. i may have to punt and go for crappy ones not made for salt water

Re: 1965 Starcraft Cheiftain

Finally starting to make some progress in the assembly direction.

Last weekend installed some Riv-nut inserts so that I can bolt the floor down rather than rivet it in place.

I want to have the option of easy removal down the road if necessary.

This Saturday I sprayed some rocker guard on the sides above the shelf. I will be bringing the side boards all the way up to the top of the gunnels with long oval access holes. I think it looks better than an open shelf where all kinds of crap can accumulate. The black of the rocker guard will hopefully create a neutral look to the background.

Stuffed as much foam sheets as possible under the deck.

Laid down the expoy coated deck boards but bolting them down will have to wait for tomorrow.
Once the deck is down its back to more disassembly as I want to remove the cabin wall and replace it. I will be moving the door to the center while I am at it.

Well the riv-nuts didnt work out as easily as i had hoped.
All they did was spin inside the stringer without allowing the deck to tighten down.
Now I have to figure out a way of removing them so I can lift the deck board up and probably replace it. Oh well, Back to the drawing board again.

I just pulled this one from my boat, it might be available. Not an exact match, but an original SC. PM if thinking.

If you can pry up on the board that may hold the insert and allow you to get the bolt out.
Sometimes is 2 steps forward and 1 step back.

Well the riv-nuts where a complete disaster! I would not recommend their use to anyone for any purpose.
All they did was spin inside the stringer without allowing the deck to tighten down.
Now I have to figure out a way of removing them so I can lift the deck board up and probably replace it. All due to the damage of those crappy riv-nuts.

Hi CB, just reading through your thread and I was hoping these riv-nuts were going to work out for ya. Looking at replacing the floor on my SS down the road and I thought it would be nice to install these riv-nuts. I'm not certain but I thought someone else had tried this process with better results.

With an uneven (curved) surface on the inside of a rib, if you didn't use 1, would an air rivet gun have tightened the riv-nut better?

Re: 1965 Starcraft Cheiftain

Got back at the boat this weekend.
Managed to get the deck bolted down with the riv-nuts.
Took 2-3 steps back then started ahead again.

Cut and fit the boards that run along the sides.

Next weekend I will be taking down the cabin wall and replacing it.
Then its time to install the carpet on the deck and sides.

Coming together nicely. What was done differently to get the Riv-nuts to work?

Re: 1965 Starcraft Cheiftain

Over the May 24 long weekend I made some more progress on the boat.
DSC01522.jpg

Installed the rug and the ski locker.

Side boards are attached to the "Z" channel and are ready to rivet down.
Next step boxes or some other method of seat supports.
Almost done!!
