Re: 1974 Starcraft 21ft Holiday OB questions

i apologize for the mistake. i assumed that the longer rake on the front of the boat was part of the v5 hull compared to many of the other boats of the age which seemed to have a stub nose front.

Re: 1974 Starcraft 21ft Holiday OB questions

wow, the summer has been flying by and i have spent so much time in my boat this summer i hate to admit that i haven't been on the computer more than 2 dozen times since the last holiday. how's everybody been? I've got some quick questions. My 5 year old has been having a hell of a time climbing over the 3.5 ft tall sides of the boat. i want to put teak swim platforms out the back. any suggestions? also, what's everybodys take on a top? although my girls love the sun. it would be nice to get out of it once in a while without having to go in for the day.

i was just looking at those platforms over lunch break. the only thing that worries me is the sun getting to the plastic over time. i've had teak on the back of my parents ebbtide boat since new in 87. we've only restained it once since then. what's your ideas behind not liking it?

Purely aesthetic reasons. I don't see my tin SS as a "teak" type boat. I have a teak rod locker and I'd rather that wasn't either. I also am not real interested in maintaining it. My boat came with a teak platform but it was pretty beat and needed some work so I gave it away.

wow, although I am on this thing all the time, I realized that I haven't posted on my thread in close to a year. with that being said I guess i can show everybody what I've been up too.

This was in the middle of October last year. Although the water was cooling down it was still beautiful out

This was my last run of the season with the big boat, I think this was November 14th?

I packed the boat into the barn for the winter and pulled her out march 12th when it got up in the 80's for a week or so. Since then I've been slowly working on the boat and getting back into river season.

The first thing i was looking for was a good place to keep a set of speakers. I came up with these 2 ideas, don't mind the carpet as I will be covering everything in vinyl soon.

i made the boxes out of 3/4 ply and gave them 5 coats out sikkens waterproofing. The fit prefect under my step and don't bounce around when cruising down the river :)

i hope everybody had a safe holiday weekend, I'm glad I spent the better part of my weekend working in the driveway, Had a dozen people with OWI's on the river the last 4 days.... I guess I can start with my first project of the weekend... my dash got cracked last Thursday night, dont make me explain, so I got started on my new dash.... I used 3/4 inch ply and just covered it with carpet for the time being.

this is the old dash... cracked in a few spots. seen better days.

Re: 1974 Starcraft 21ft Holiday OB questions

my next big project for the weekend. and ill be looking for ideas and comments........... i have a 22 ft long boat... give er take a few inches... one problem I have noticed is that its hard to get access to the back of the boat in a hurry, along with overall storage. I like to keep everything in its place but I also dont like crawling under the front nose of my boat to show the DNR officer my 10 life jackets along with other safety stuff. with that being said I stole an idea from many other boats and created my own idea of a sundeck. This is just the beginning of the project but I thought i should show everybody how it layed down....

this is what i started with

I moved my seat forward like 17 inches and built a deck

I used 2x4 square aluminum tubing and i cut down treated 2x4s and put everything together....... the deck is just over 30 inches wide. enough to lay 2 girls on the back of the boat... the pictures speak for themselves.....
i used a stainless piano hinge across the back...

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but pressure treated wood and aluminum boats do not play well together. The chemicals, specifically the copper solution, causes corrosion because of galvanic reaction between copper and aluminum. I hope you didn't use PT when you you did the floor. BTW - you have a good looking big Holiday.

Your sundeck idea is looking great, but yes, get the PT wood out of there. The issues between aluminum and PT is no joke!
