I have a 1973 slickcraft ss-204, with a mercruiser 188hp v-8 (ford engine). The boat started sputtering the last time out; so I put new plugs in and changed the oil. But the boat still won't stay running. It is a older boat so it requires leaded gas, so I made sure to add a lead additive every time I gassed up; going by the additives directions. I used 87 octane also. What else can I do?

OK, well I'd check it like any car motor: timing, carb, fuel/water filter, air cleaner (backflame arrestor). what kind of motor is this?

Ive heard nightmare stories about the gas being ditributed. It seems that the new additives have some sort of chemical that destroys boat tanks and fuel lines. I would check all filters and hoses. If you find any that are deteriorated replace them with alcohol resistant lines.
