My 77 cobalt omc electric shift will not forward or reverse. I have checked switch and coils in lower unit, both are getting power. I was told you had to have a special gear oil for electric shift. I was told any water in lower unit would cause it not to work, I checked gear oil and it's looks fine no water and still has good color. Any ideas on what else I can check? Thanks, Naton

Re: 1977 Cobalt OMC electric shift problem

I have run one of these for years. I would check the connections inside the boat by the motor. It is a plug that allows you to remove the drive. These things kinda lock together and are covered with rubber. If they get corroded they will not work. Its kinda hard to explain. Its not a plug its more like a mechanical link that locks together and then this rubber slides over it. I hope this helps.
