Overheating, water not taking in to engine..

I have a volvo penta 290 D1 C1 series drive on a 454 7.4 GL Engine. Before water would go up throug the stern to the engine and back out through the exhaust. now when I hook the muff up water comes out thourgh the intermediate housing and not the exhaust. and the temp rises over the normal140 - 160 F.. Is there a diagram that would show me the possible problem thats keeping the water from getting to the engine fromthe stern.. Thanks

The impeller in the stern drive?? because this is where the water is coming from.
