Mayfloat,
That straight-line crack repair method wouldn't be called "stitching" would it?

c/6
Hooty

Re: Mayfloat & Block Crack (Technical Stuff)

KKC,

If you have a crack in your crankcase in the water jacket, usually on the side of the block, it can be repaired using pipe plugs. By drilling holes, tapping threads, installing the plug, grind off the plug flush, drill the next hole overlapping into the plug you just put in. Do this until the crack is stitched up so to speak. Apply pipe dope to the threads of the pipe plug first.

I have never tried it on heads, but personnally would be leary of repairing due to warpage.

This repair is only good providing you do not get water in your oil. That would mean you have an internal crack. Then you must replace the block. ChaChing!

Should use oil while drilling the holes to keep the heat down. This repair becomes strong from the interlocking of the plugs and their threads. If it is done right, it won't leak any at all. What is really neat about this method is that you don't have to tear the engine down for the repair.

Some think it is a waste of time, unsafe, and unreliable. I say let them waste their money on a new block. If you don't think you would trust this method, don't do it.

When everything is done, grind the surface down smooth, prime and paint and you can't tell it was ever done.

Hope this helps.....SS

Re: Mayfloat & Block Crack (Technical Stuff)

This topic is really more suited for the non-boating section and therefore moved.

Sorry for the inconvience.

Quarter inch to 3/8ths plugs. The bigger the plugs the less drilling and tapping. I have used 1/2 inch before, but prefer the 3/8..

SS
