What is the physical difference between a standard and "Heavy Duty" outboard engine? If the engines are of the same horse power and make why is one model a commercial/heavy duty?

Thank you,
Nick

what heavy duty outboard are you looking at?

may be a marketing gimmick, may be a legit heavy duty commercial outboard.

usually, bigger bearings, more conservative power output per displacement, and a really long life (with proper maintenance)

Thank you for the response.
The question was asked of me and I don't know the answer but I have seen the term in the Johnson engine manual and at the time, I didn't think to try and find what the difference is.

I'l bet JB would have known. Red Sky at night. (Just a remembrance.)

happy boating,
Nick

Depends on engine manufacturer, usually more SS bolts, heavy duty SS water pump, larger anodes and water intake screens, probably more paint added than a standard one.

Typically geared lower for lower speed, high thrust applications

Yamaha makes an " Enduro" line of their outboards that has some heavier gears, bearings, other longer-life features for more work/commercial/fishing boat applications.....
