Is anyone familiar with the A4LD transmission issues. I recently came into possession of a 1990 For Ranger with the 4.0L V6. The Auto trans will shift from 1-2 perfect. Before it shifts the 2-3 it shifts back into 1 and revs high before I get the 1-2-3 shift. Once it locks up, it is good. This issue happens everytime you take off from a dead stop. Once it shifts the 2-3 shift, there are no issues. Trans fluid and filter changed, nothing major internal. Just the normal dirt.

I have read that possible issues are the servo piston and the intermediate band may be out of adjustment.

Does anyone have any experience with these trans? Any advice on how to remedy the situation?

The same tranny they used in the Explorers and 9 out of 10 times it was the servo piston that gave it problems.

Sounds like valve body issues to me. May be time to open it up and drop the valve body and clean it. But that is merely a wild guess. I have rebuilt a lot of 4L60E's and TH350's in my days.

Get a manual transmission and you dont have to worry about automatics
