with all of the different political discussions
I have read/ participated in here, I have never
heard anyone say they are a "libertarian".
while I vote for a person and not a party, I must
say that I most closely associate myself with
the priniples of personal freedom and less gov't
intrusion in peoples lives. just curious if
anyone else considers themselves a libertarian?
the escalating loss of freedom in this country
scares the crud out of me!
regards,
M.Y.

Re: libertarians?

I am way more a Libretarian than a Republican or a Democrat. The only problem with most Libretarians is that are too radical like most libs. So I guess I'd say I am a practical, pragmatic, Libretarian.

Re: libertarians?

"Libertarian" is viewed by many folks as a radical right wing point of view.

I don't consider myself radical, but I am certainly right wing on many issues, but I am also liberal on many things.

Personal freedom and liberty are very high on my list of priorities, though. When I am "liberal" it is for the personal freedom and liberty of others, even when it offends me what they do with it too often.

If that makes me a Libertarian, then so be it. You don't really have freedom if you would deny it to others.

Kenny, I was to young to tell but they were very nice people...funny thing was they were sort of liberal in the way they excepted other regions. My mother was liberal. They preached with the Bible and they didnt fret about other religions. They were respectful to all religions if I'm not mistaken. I believe Ben Franklin was a Libertarian....

EDIT: Wow! I just said the same thing for three sentences..quess theres some sort of point I was trying to make.

Re: libertarians?

A modern libertarian is basically a republican w/o the social agenda. Problem is, many libretarians border on anarchists and think the government has almost no good role to play in society at all. For example they think drugs should be legal, that there should be no government regulation of free markets, no social welfare system at all, etc.

Re: libertarians?

Hello M.Y.
I much like the libertarian points of view.My problem with them is that they put the individualist's point of view ahead of the interest of the people as a nation. And when left unchecked it tends to become anarchistic in the pure existentialist ways of Jean-Paul Sartre and Simone De Beauvoir. These principals although lofty, make a nation completely ungovernable.
So yes, the ideals are attractive, but for practical reasons,I will not vote in that direction.

Re: libertarians?

All the Liberitarians do is take votes away from the republicans! A vote for a Liberitarian is a vote that is wasted and gives the Left an advantage!!!

LubeDude

Re: libertarians?

Anybody with extreme right views (some of mine are extreme) would be dumb to vote for a candidate who hasn't the chance of a snowball in Texas of getting elected.

I vote Republican. I do think, however, that commies, socialists and other extreme liberals should vote for extreme left candidates. :D

No, Rolmops, I don't love Ralph Nader, but I have to agree that diluting Gore's vote was a good thing he did.

And yes, I am quite happy with G.W. Bush as my President. I don't agree with everything he says or does, but the only guy I agree with on EVERYTHING is JB. :D

Re: libertarians?

What you guys are forgetting.
Is what was a liberal/Democrat and conservative/Repulican 40-50 years ago is very different now days.
Both liberal and conservatism 50 years ago had good points mainly because it was a more honest and sensible debate. As was everything else.
Today both views are corrupted with abstract agendas.
True conservatism is a far cry from todays Republican politics and todays liberalism is closer to socialism then progressive ideas.
Libertarian politics is great if you live on your own island. But government, IN LIMITED AMOUNTS is very neccesary.
I still like the Federalists view best of all and pray someday we'll get back to it.

Oh, and BTW. You guys and gals are alright by me, all of you.
Happy holidays. ;)

Re: libertarians?

JB I dont love Nader either.I think he is just another selfish politician. The main reason why he did not advice his people to vote for Gore was his fear for falling below the level at which he would get federal funds for the next election campaign. So you can see what exactly his ideology is all about. It is about Nader, Nader and Nader.
And no I did not believe that you would like Nader for anything except taking away very crucial votes from Gore.It is a sad comment to see that this man decided the election in the pursuit of selfishness.
