  • And yet another change. We need to stay flexible in these fluid times. My wife received an email this evening letting her know that she'll be "working from home" for the next couple of weeks via online training programs. That's fine.

We went out this evening and checked on boat ramps. The good news is that we found 3 saltwater and 1 freshwater ramp open. For now, anyway.

    • And today... my daughter (who lives in Denver) got laid off today.

The company may not be able to survive because they did "event planning" as their mainstay.

That's hard. My company is a similar type. We've had to lay most of our staff off, and we're all working part time to try to keep the place alive until this is over. We can stay alive like this for a few months, but not too much longer.

        • Usually I reserve this for something else, SK knows. All of this sucks!

I had to make a quick trip out about 5. Traffic was the lightest I've ever seen, almost like Christmas day. I crossed over a freeway and normally that time of a workday it's chockablock, not today. It was almost nonexistent.

All stores except for gas stations, fast food and supermarkets are closed. A bustling place is now a ghost town.

          • Our province of Ontario is in lock down and declared a state of emergency. Every business is being affected with this this invisible enemy. In Ontario unless in a small town where corner stores can sell liquor and beer we need to go The Liquor Control Board of Ontario LCBO or the Beer Store to get our stuff. It has not closed as they are deemed to be essential services. At least our politicians know what gets votes. There are still idiots out there like nothing is happening. My wife and I are about to make a big change in our lives. Place is for sale and we are going to downsize then she can retire. Not a good time to sell, not many shopping for property and I understand that 110%. We were planning on traveling so she didn't get another cat when hers passed. I said we might as well get a puppy and a kitty because even after this is all done life as we knew it just 3 weeks ago will never be the same. I predict anyone that travels out of the country in the future will go into some type of quarantine when returning. This is not the last virus that is a pandemic, it's one of the first in our lifetimes. She is still going into work as she is at a national pharmacy chain. She's the Cosmetics manager. The cosmetic dept. is an essential service? Come on man. I don't like it one bit. I would rather she stay home without pay than to be in the public today.

            • Polititions--I know spelled wrong !-----Are scrambling like never before.-----I called the place where I normally buy seed potatoes to perhaps put my name on a list , have some delivered.-----But get this they also sell pet food and are allowed to remain open.------Some of this is a wee joke ----Every answer by JT the drama teacher was , we are working on it / considering it ETC------My question is this where do governments suddenly find billions of $$$$-----And there are many wonderful places to visit in CANADA.----I see many wonderful places overseas but when I see all those fences around people's mansions I won't go there.

For years I have been saying that our current economic and financial model is flawed. This may be the impetus to change it to a fairer and more equatable system. Have a look at 'The Venus Project'.. Interesting.

                  • For years I've thought too much emphasis is placed on the stock markets. The last few weeks has proven it in my mind. When the words of one person drive the market up and down, you know the numbers aren't based on facts.

With Las Vegas casinos closed, the gamblers moved to Wall St. Not quite true as the gamblers have always been at Wall St. playing with other peoples money, 401 accounts and short sellers. One firm bellied up this week because they couldn't cover their shorts.

I agree. I can see a lot of flaws, but the current model is unworkable. Has been for a long time, it's just taking this current crisis to (hopefully) bury it.

For me, the biggest issue (with the current model) is the one of constant 'growth'. That's so totally unsustainable, yet the people who have the power to affect change are the ones who are the most resistant to that change.

Hopefully (and I'm really putting the rose-coloured glasses on here) at the other end of this, the world will be a fairer and more equatable place, where we ALL work together for the betterment of the species. And stop this incessant squabbling over whose 'god' is better

Where a person's status within society isn't how much money they have, but how much value they contribute to the species. (yes, I'm looking at you over-paid actors, sports people, politicians, lawyers, advertising executives, 'influencers'! Since when is 'influencer' an actual job?)

I doubt there will be that drastic of a paradigm shift.

                              we're screwed.

Yeah, a week ago my daughter told me that her company had laid off all the hourly employees and that the salaried group would have to take a 30% pay cut and that the company could last 5 months that way. They'd lost $500k in the prior couple of weeks. Yesterday that figure was up to $1 million. They just couldn't hold on.

Fortunately, my daughter is strong, versatile and capable. She's working on some plans of her own. I offered to let her come down here and stay while she regrouped. She rapidly declined the offer!
