Our first of 3 Cup road course races counting the Charlotte Roval this year. Trucks are at St. Louis and X-Men are off this week.

Sonoma has a new layout with the reintroduction of the Carousel last used in 1997. The track will be more than a 1/2 mile longer than last year.

Sonoma will be hot and dry as usual, but St. Louis may be soggy on Saturday.

A few significant events since the last Cup race at Michigan, so on to the news.

News and Notes
  • First up - Penalties
    • Ross Chastain had his win and $50K bonus check in the Iowa Truck race taken away for low ride height. His watermelon turned into a cucumber.
    • Johnny Sauter pulled a bone head move and was parked during the same race for intentionally wrecking Austin Hill during a caution cuz he wasn't happy with Hill's driving. The parking led to a one week suspension at Gateway. He is still eligible for the Truck playoffs.
    • Minors for loose/missing lugnuts in Cup at Michigan.
  • This is the final race call by Darrell Waltrip as he heads to the rocking chair on the porch. Fox is saying they have no plans to replace him and next year the booth will be manned by two, Gordon and Joy, I guess.
  • The 2020 rules are out. Really the same as this year with some splitter and radiator pan tweaks and 2 glaring errors in the graphic
    • 2020rules.png DC Solar is no longer sponsoring Lyle Larson cuz the owner was charged by the Feds of running a Ponzi scheme. And Nascar forgot that Monster will not be the Cup series sponsor next year.
  • TV ratings - The rain delayed Michigan race got a 1.0 rating.

iBoats Fantasy Live
  • Humpty's bud got an acorn.
  • Justkiddin 5 is keeping the overall lead all to himself.
  • The pole locks at 3:05 PM Saturday.

Good luck all,

First Cup practice just finished. The 5 fastest are Truex, Blaney, Buescher, Johnson and McDowell. 2nd practice at 5:40.

Here is a layout of the track with the Carousel in blue and more right turns. Since 1997 the Carousel has been bypassed.

So far today the Trucks have been washed out in St. Louis. Rain be moving out, but who knows. Still trying for a practice later on, but Q-ing has been cancelled.

In Cup - All the cars made it through inspection before qualifying at Sonoma. This is an impound race, so inspection before the start of the race tomorrow. 3:05 is still the pole lock time.

I didn't have a chance to watch or listen to the Truck race last night. Reading the recap, it was a good one. Fuel only on his last stop and holding fresher tires off while leading the final restart with 7 laps to go.

He racing at Sonoma today, too. His car was qualified by Weatherman yesterday, so he starts at the rear.

3:08 is the current roster cut-off time.

Byron wins the caution free 1st heat. It was so close with 2nd place Hamlin over 9 seconds behind. LOL

Another caution free heat won by Hamlin for his 2nd heat win of the year. Almirola and Menard had spins, but the green stayed out.

A lot of cars have smushed noses. Still no cautions and a plenty of spins.

Fox has said they have no plan to replace DW in the booth. Mikey gets to keep the pit walk gig or what ever they call it.
