How many cars and trucks have you had over the years?

We were talking about vehicles we have owned over the years at the shop. I decided to list them all over the last 48 years. I listed 32, then the next day would remember 2 more, then 3 more then my brother said what about the 65 Impala, oops missed another. I am putting together an album of old grainy pics taken by an Instamatic and forgot this one and that one. I'm up to 43. Most I killed, dead, morto, deep sixed. I can't watch Wayne Carrini's show Chasing Classic Cars. I had a 69 280 SE Benz rag top I paid 3 grand for in 75. He just sold one for $175,000. The internet has pics of every car and truck I ever had in the right colour and I am sick looking at them as I put the album together. I don't want to know what they would be worth today had I not killed most. I just remembered the 61 International Harvester pick up. I think it was a 1 ton and maybe a 4X4. Up to 44 now. Lately I keep a car for up to 10 years. There were times I was curbsiding a bit I had 3 or more in a year.

Can anyone remember how many you have had? 20 somethings need not apply.

Yup, I went through the same "album creation" thing about a year ago. I remembered 51 vehicles.

Then a couple weeks ago I remembered another. Sigh. What a waste of money. I could have been rich if I'd invested in almost anything except dumping cash into cars. LOL!

Hmmmmm ... 14 (Had two of the Chrysler Laser's), and if you add the Tercel the Admiral had when we got married that would make 15.

1976 Ford Pinto (<== actually loved that car)
1977 Ford Mustang II
1986 Chrysler Laser Turbo
1992 Ford Escort Wagon
1987 Chevy Celebrity
1992 Dodge 250 Conversion Van
1998 Pontiac Montana
1997 Dodge Caravan
2000 Mercury Mountaineer
1984 Chevy 1500 Van
2007 Ford E150
2004 Dodge RAM 2500
1999 Pontiac Firebird

That little '92 Escort was a pretty solid little car.

I just remembered the 98' Grand Prix. What an eclectic list you have South hogs. You sure aren't stuck on 1 of the big 3 eh? I only had 1 Chrysler in my life a 03' Intrepid and that was for work and it will be the very last. I hated Chryslers back when we were kids in the 70's simply because the starters sounded like a Cat in heat. Ringringringaring. We can be a strange species.

dingbat, no wonder you haven't had that many over the years, mostly Japanese and GM products. I'll forgive you for the Jeep. Man I just remembered my AMC era YJ, another one forgotten! Ford ignition, GM or Chrysler 6 banger I think and a conglomeration of parts from around the world. Fun as Hell though if you have a good strong back. I had that for 6 months before the timing chain snapped and I threw a rod into the underside of the hood. The valve cover was paper thin. I traded it for 20 sheets of 5/8's plywood.

Most of the cars were for going in and out of the Steel plant. Driving through all the chemicals, mostly sulphur dioxide and iron oxide that ran across the roads and laid on the body work would kill a Humvee in a year. Our rental trucks would be scrapped after 10 thousand miles. Max speed was 15 MPH, imagine what that did to a V-8. I remembering going to the Mobile Shop to pick up our dept. little short box Ford and the shop Foreman handed me a half dozen pencils he found down the carb. I have stories that would make a good car owner cry.

Actually, both Jeeps where out of necessity.
Avid surf fisherman....the Cherokee was the only 4WD "station wagon" after they stopped making the "Cadillac of the surf" the Jeep Grand Wagoneer.

The Cherokee was the victim of 2 foot'itice as was the Grand Cherokee Laredo. My wife loved that truck. The hot blonde in the black "grocery getter" with 5.2L under the hood and a heavy foot.

The girls still talk about hot rodding around with Mom listening to the yellow CD (Stone Temple Pilots - Purple) Must had been something...the girls where 3 and 6 when we sold the truck...lol

From first to current;
  1. 1960 Ford Falcon Tudor. Sold when I joined the Air Force
  2. 1934 Ford convertible project with flathead V8 with more missing than present parts - It was gonna be my hot rod, never ran a minute. Sold for much less than I paid.
  3. 1961 Rambler American 2 dr. sedan, flathead 6 3 sp. stick. Wrecked by a roommate.
  4. 1957 Chevy Belaire 2 dr. hardtop. Started with no motor, dropped in a worn out 6, then a built 301 small block. I wrecked it by hitting a pole on an icy road while on leave.
  5. 1961 Corvair 500 4-door - almost killed my brother and I from the exhaust leak into the heater box. And I know it was Unsafe At Any Speed! Traded
  6. 1962 Mercury Monterey Custom convertible - What a boat! Traded.
  7. 1970 VW Bug, new - Cheap and unreliable transportation. Traded.
  8. 1965 Triumph TR6. The 2 wheel kind with a worked 650 CC motor. Don't know - It was in pieces the shed when the Ex-Admiral took possession of #14.
  9. 1962 Corvette - A joint venture with my brother.
  10. 1953 English Ford Anglia 2 dr. Once again an effort with my brother. This was converted to a drag car. The Vette and Anglia reverted to my brother when I married.
  11. 1972 AMC Gremlin X, new. 304 V8, Chrysler 727 auto.. First and only car I ordered. Loved this car , but I swear it started rusting before I left the dealer. Traded.
  12. 1978 Ford Pinto 2 dr., new. A fancy job - Dark blue with gold C stripe and a front spoiler made to plow snow. Traded.
  13. 1970 Toyota Corolla 2 dr. sedan. Beater for to and from work. Sold.
  14. 1982 Chrysler LeBaron coupe, new. It was a gussied up K-car. The ex-wife kept it.
  15. 1974 Triumph Spitfire 1500. Came with a blown motor. Later sold after years of use.
  16. 1973 Triumph Spitfire 1500. Every thing bad except the motor. Parts car for the '74. Scrapped for cash
  17. 1986 Chrysler LeBaron GTS turbo, new. A fast car. Sold
  18. 1975 Chevy Nova 2 dr. with Stovebolt 6 Another get to work car. Traded.
  19. 1985 Jeep Cherokee XJ Wagoneer. A luxe 4.0 HO 6 4X4 with power everything except flotation. It was drowned on a Galveston beach. :blue: Insurance paid more than I paid for it about 4 years earlier. Totaled.
  20. 1987 Dodge Ramcharger 4X4. A beast with a 360 V8, nothing stopped it except a gas station - 11 MPG! Sold.
  21. 1998 Jeep Cherokee Classic. 2X4 daily driver. Still have it.
  22. 2000 Toyota Avalon. Admiral's daily driver. Still have it.

I tend to hang on to cars.

No, not really. All three of them have produced some good cars - and all three of 'em have produced some real dogs. The Celebrity and the Montana were both problem children. But even with all of the trouble that Montana gave us, there were some really good things about it that made me want it to be a better car.

I tend to lean Ford & Dodge, but it's not a hard rule. Definitely a "Detroit Iron" kinda' guy ... and finding that I gravitate to the older cars. Drooling over some of Scott and GA's lists. But now I live in "Nissan" North America land, and I can't deny they make some sharp stuff too.

Now that we have my wife's ride settled for a few years and I AM going to sell my Superfisherman 190 this spring and my 2011 Silverado 4x4 , I know WHY???? I will be in the market for a daily driver classic. Not a trailer queen, something we can ride in every once in a while. It will be a rag top Detroit or WINDSOR iron. The problem there as the top goes down the price goes up. Maybe even a Brit micro or Italian. I would love an Alfa Spider Veloce, circa mid 70's. I wish. I can get a Chevy big block 70's for the same price, a Malibu SS or Chevelle, again a daily driver, no numbers matching but a nice driver. My dreamer is a 65' Impala SS, the car my Mom taught me to drive in. My father wasn't brave or stupid enough to try and teach me. He sure had good taste in cars, that I give him. He will be 91 next month. We are having lunch with them both tomorrow. Ask him what he misses most in life and he will say driving a GM car. Sex isn't above winters in FLA!! Good story. The last car he bought was a loaded 2010 Toyota Camry. 2 months later he insisted in trading it in on a new Impala and did. Believe it or not he only lost $1000.00 on the trade in.

I will get another 4x4 SUV to replace the pick up. My brother bought a beauty Cady SUV last summer but you need to take your shoes off to get in the thing. I won't miss the pick up, now I won't have a reason to say no to my friends to borrow it to move their kids or go to Homeless Despot. I just can't say no.

As far as the boat I'm going to downsize. I may buy a 16'er side council Smoker Craft we totally redid this winter. New everything exempt hull. 1998 70HP Mariner. Small enough for me to go solo close to Erie's shore for Perch, Smallies or the river for Cats, Bass and Pics, plus all my crew have the big boats to hit the Great Lakes fish. We argue as to whos boat we are going to take, now I can sit back and say you choose. I'll end up with a few inches of money in my Jeans in the fall to buy my classic to boot. After I pay my share for a day fishing it's a win win.

Scott

Jeeze Scott you got me beat. Man that is an eclectic list for certain. Those Opals were classics. I think I paid more in repairs for my 79' Audi 5000S, 5 cylinder, than the original 11K price in 1980.That was a lot of money then, hell still is. It was the first sedan I had that vacuumed the road though. Massive understeer. I forgot about bikes, they are vehicles too eh? Back to the drawing board. Only 4 bikes. I do have to say there are a few I wouldn't get caught dead in. They must have been your wife's. Astro's and Sunbirds?

You have a trap door for a mind. I would never be able to determine the outcome of all mine, lest the origin.

(on my 3rd Vodka, sorry Scott)

Too many to remember that I have owned over the last 62 years. It is sort of like remembering how many girlfriends you have had. You can always remember the first one and the last one but the ones in between gets a little fuzzy.

I currently have on order a 2018 Aventus Sam 310 inflatable that I will take delivery of on May 2nd so that will be added to my list.

Having grown up in a car dealership family, there are way too many to list. A few of my favorite fun cars were:

‘29 Oakland
’41 Pontiac Coupe
’58 Vette with ‘61 engine. Sold several times after I sold it, ended up in Thailand as a right hand drive Vette)
’72 Venaville (gold Bonneville with a green Ventura right front fender ... first car)
’72 Fiat Spider Convertible (driven till I blew my knee out and couldn’t depress clutch)
’72 Catalina Convertible (cherry red with white top and interior)
’76 Trans Am (black and gold 50th Anniversary Edition ... still have)
’78 Firebird (6cyl Red)
’80 Jeep Scrambler (Iron Duke 4cyl ... a blast)
’82 Toronado (Dark grey, sharp car)
’84 Trans Am (Black and Silver HO ... I walked for 15 days because of that car ...)
‘98 Bravado
‘00 Yukon Denali (Dad ordered it and died before it came in, Sentimental purchase)
’05 Grand Prix Supercharged

There were plenty of other vehicles, mostly Pontiac or GMC. Current vehicles are:

above mentioned ‘76 T/A
2005 Grand Am GT
2010 GMC Yukon
2013 GMC Acadia

I was able to list 21 since my first car in 1971, but I know there were a few more short-term, forgettable rides along the way. I'm calling it 24 in total. Many of them were pretty beat up when I bought them. I have lots of memories of epic breakdowns and other sundry adventures. This was a fun exercise!

65 Mustang Coupe - 6 cyl automatic
64 Triumph TR-4 - all the choke linkage was gone. Had to manually adjust the 2 carbs as it warmed up. Positive ground electrical system that I never really figured out.

67 Olds Cutlass Supreme Conv't - 330 4V. Nice.
69 Camaro Conv't - 6 cyl auto
64 Dodge Polara - pretty rusty. Burned a quart of oil a week. An unbreakable tank.
69 Toyota Corona 4-speed - $250. Drove it for 2 years and sold it for more than I paid.
73 VW Bus - NO HEAT

69 AMC AMX 2 -seater - my personal favorite - NOT the later Javelin with the AMX badges. 343 4V, leather reclining buckets, A/C. Very quick and handled great. I actually mourn that car to this day. My then-fiance (now my wife of 37 years) spun and totaled it while I was putting an AM-FM radio in her Ford Maverick  I'm SO glad she wasn't hurt, but damn....

75 Triumph Spitfire
78(?) Pontiac LeMans Wagon - ugh.
82 Chevy Cavalier Wagon - zero power but it handled great.
84 Dodge 600 Turbo Conv't- tremendous turbo lag... then the power kicked in and scared the hell out of ya. Can you say 'torque steer'? I remember feathering the throttle to get it up on ramps without launching it through the garage door.

79 Chevy Impala
84(?) Chevy Celebrity Wagon
91 Chevy Lumina - had the short-lived 60-degree, 3.6 liter V-6. Very peppy.
2000 Honda Odyssey Van
1980 Fiat Spider 2000 (124 Spider) - restored it myself. Nice little car with plenty of 'character'.
95 Chevy 1500 4WD Pickup
2003 Dodge Ram 2500 4WD Pickup - the 10 mpg monster. My teenage daughter wouldn't walk in front of it. She was afraid that it might reach out and eat her.

2007 Mitsubishi Outlander
2015 Chevy Equinox

My .02

@82rude..... To space your wordings or go to the next paragraph etc., like I did for you here, all you have to do is click on the "Enter" button of a key board and it should drop downwards...If you're using a different device, let us know what you have and I'm sure someone can advise.
