In the old days when winches had rope, I had a few break. Always upgraded the size of the rope when I got a new trailer.

Had a steel cable for 35 years. No rust, no problem. The hook is attached at the factory. Don't try to buy bulk wire and do it yourself. When I pull out the cable I hold onto the hook, not the cable. Never had a pin prick from the cable. Coated cable would bind and the coating would come off in a hurry, messing up the whole winch.

Straps are neat, but better buy an industrial yellow strap rather than the oem junk on trailers. I never had one break myself, but saw one break. Its all because the trailer was kept outside in the sun and rain. UV will destroy the material.
