Re: Escort trailer parts VIN

I have recently imported a 20' Escort trailer from the US to Canada. I also had the problem of the Compliance label being unreadable as the ink had faded and need all kinds of info from this label to complete the importation process. So I vowed to share my knowledge once I jumped thru all the hoops, as I found links like this one invaluable and helped me avoid having to export the trailer back to the us...so here goes...

VIN should also be somewhere else on the trailer other than on the compliance label. With Escort trailers look on the inside of the main beams that run to the back of the trailer, about 1-2ft from the back of the trailer. It should be clear on this label, it was crystal clear on mine. (On ezy-loader trailers look on the inside of the metal box frame where it joins to the drawbar that goes to the hitch, actually inside the tube.) Once you have that go here http://www.maxumboatparts.com/1999/trailers/output/refer.htm#1014290 to find you trailer model, you will also be able to decode your vin from this link, model year of manufacture, length, where it was made etc. At the top of this page you can navigatye thru and find diagrams of different models they made etc. I worked out that my trailer was a 20' WT20GEB-X, with the titan ST 215/75D14C, BSW, (GALV) SPOKE wheels and tires. I then went back to my faded compliance label and looked REALLY hard at it, by wetting the area where it tells you max load and having the light shine on it just right I could make out that 3075 lbs, the gross vehicle weight is 3740 lbs, so net trailer weight must be 665 lbs. Max tire weight is 1870 lbs for this tire, max pressure is 50 psi.

For those Canadians looking to import a trailer I would suggest you have a letter from Escort stating all the above if it cannot be read off of the compliance label as they need this info to pass the federal test, without it you have to send the trailer back to the us! Given Escort no longer exists this can be difficult to say the least, luckily I had such a letter from 2004 when they did still exist and it had all the above info on it, plus year and month of manufacture, Federal test at Canadian tire was a breeze with this. If they did not like the letter I was going to go to another Canadian tire till I found someone that did like it, but first try everything went well. So where do you get such a letter from? Um I think I got mine from the previous owner, it was a fax from the trailer manufacturer, or that is what it looked like....umm yeah so that was lucky. The trailer is very well made and I had just spent $500 rebuilding the brakes completely so it is a great and safe trailer. And was originally made to meet all canadian regulations as stated on the compliance label.

I hope this helps some boat importer or escort trailer owner.

Usually the vin number was used on the registration, depending on the state. Got the old registration?

Re: Escort trailer parts VIN

So my very long day of dealing with the registry and finding out the guy that owned the trailer last that had it titeled died last year and i wouldn't be able to register it unless i talked to his estate. Well after 2hrs of hold on the registry phone i found out that the trailer was to old to need a vin or title anyway and just register it as a utility under 3000lbs so iif you live in mass your escort trailer nightmare problem is solved

for what its worth, I have an escort trailor under my '02 Trophy. The bearing greasers are not "Bearing Buddy's". They are made by Tie Down Eng. After visiting thier web site, it turns out they make a lot of trailor parts. I can't
confirm if they made the whole trailer or not, but they must have made some of the parts. They are worth looking at.

Re: Escort trailer parts VIN, Try Registering It In Maine

Yea, I know, ancient history this thread but in the interest of anyone who is in similar straits with trailer registration check out MAINE. There are a few outfits that do cross state registrations there and it's cheap and very easy. I know I have 3 of them registered there for way less than the price of one in NY. They only require a COPY of the REG or TITLE to do the deed. One of my trailers I got with nothing more than a bill of sale, that's it. Got it off a friend of mine who got it from who knows who. Sent that in with a check for $45 and got a 5 year plate and reg in return. All that with a check in the mail and 3 weeks time, nothing to it. Trailers over 3000lbs are $80/5 years and none of that incremental weight bull**** like NY. There is a stipulation about titling newer than 96 models. I did mine through MBI Trailer and couldn't be happier with them. They have a web site and you can call and immediately reach an intelligent human being who can answer your questions. Yea I am shilling for these guys but what can I say, you can't beat their service.

Axles are pretty generic. You need to measure overall length and distance between the spring mounts, and know the weight capacity you need.

Boat is 1.5 hrs away..schematics would be ideal, but damn impossible to find.
I have a 1992 20 ft trophy.. 93 single axle escort.
Anyone have the same model?

Re: Escort trailer parts VIN

It's been my experience over the years that most trailer manufacturers make very little in the way of mechanical parts for their trailers, most buy things like axles, springs, bolts, bearings, bunk hardware and rollers from common sources.
Forget trying to buy parts direct from the trailer's manufacturer, if parts are available though them, they will charge you top dollar for the most basic parts.
The common axle manufacturers are Dexter, Tie Down, and a few others, axles are sold by tube diameter, shape, (round, square, or U channel), and overall length. Bearings are sold by ID and OD, as are wheel seals. Most bearings and wheel seals can be had at your local auto parts store or bearing distributor.
Springs can be had online or from most spring shops in your area. Upper trailer hardware, bunks, rollers, brackets, etc. are pretty much common and determined more by the boat being hauled then the make of the trailer.
Places like iBoats and a few others online are good sources.
It's more a matter of knowing how and where to source your parts from, not a matter of trying to find parts for a particular brand of trailer.

Escort trailers were sold under Bayliner boats, I'm not sure if they were even sold separate. They were sold as part of a boat, motor, trailer package at Bayliner dealers, there were a lot of Bayliner boats sold due to price, therefore we see a lot of Escort trailers.
For the most part they were good trailers, they were well suited for the boats they were sold with. It does often take a bit of work to make one work for another type of boat. Most that I've seen have been well built and even a bit overbuilt for the size boat they came with.
