Deciphering capacity sticker

This is my 1st Tandem boat trailer. I've weighed the trailer and it weighs 1100 lbs. GVWR is showing 6840 lbs. Shouldn't that mean it has a capacity of 5740 ? Does anyone know why it says 3760 lbs and why are the numbers on there twice.

Its on there twice because two different tires are listed.

The max capacity shown is the max load

The gross AXLE weight rating is half the gross VEHICLE weight rating because its a tandem. Its on twice with the same tires because it shows you should use the same tires on both axles. 3760 capacity per axle. It doesn't show the unladen weight.

i get what you are saying about the GVWR vs GAWR being 1/2 .. makes sense.

But 3760 capacity seems too low for a Tandem but double that seems to exceed the GVWR ?

Yes, something doesn't compute. Why not call the manufacturer?

Sticker is correct, your gvwr is 6840.

Is your Pilot 2wd or 4wd? Believe the 2wd is only rated for 3500# tow capacity.

There are axle weight limits, and gross vehicle weight limits.

On your trailer, each axle is rated with the tires specified, at 3760 per axle. (probably a 5,000 axle, with load C tires).
But gvwr is not to exceed 6840.

If you put load range D tires on that trailer, each axle would likely be rated at about 4000#, but the gvwr would still be 6840.



You will find the same thing on the tow vehicle.
Here is one for a Chevy 1500 truck.
Each axle assembly ( axle/suspension/tires ) is rated at 3950, but the gvrw is limited to 7200.
(some tow vehicles will show different axle weight ratings for front and rear)

Two dufferent models.. The label covers single and tandem axle versions. .There aren't two different tires..

There is one vin number.
There is one model number.
There are two GAWR (3760#) because there are two axles.
There is one GVWR.

GVWR is often less than the sum of all GAWR on multi axle trailers.

The frame, brake actuator/coupler, or brake size could be the capacity limiting component.

Here's the deal:

each axle rating is listed twice (not sure why however, Canada thing I guess)--

you have two 3420 axles for a total 6840# GVWR

Then off to the right on the sticker you have the max load, also listed twice, 3760 for a total of 7520#

7520# minus 6840# = 680#.... And that's just a hair under 10% to account for tongue weight, which can be deducted from axle weight. Actual tongue weight is likely closer to 800#, so there's a 120# 'cushion'...

5th wheel travel trailers have goofy weight ratings like this, the one we used to own, the owner's manual actually explained it :)

I think the ratings are on there twice because one is the French and one is the English translation, required a lot in Canada. Just turns out the French and English translations are exactly the same for these measurements.

Thanks guys for all the info (some of it very funny)! my boat is only 2900 lbs but I do get a bunch of people at the launch ramp at times and just want to understand it better.
