Maximum width of vehicle/trailer on NA roads?

I can't recall and my Google skills forsake me today.

What is the legal maximum width of a vehicle and or trailer for a North American roadway? Without taking further precautions like signage or escort. I don't think Mexico has one based on my travels there. Thanks ahead of time.

Agree, 8.5 ft is across the board. That said each state is different for requirements above that. In my state, so long as your not over 9.5 the law leaves you alone with a boat

Info on brake requirements seems to vary, depending on what web site you are viewing.

assume its safe to say.....if your worried about the width, the boat is big enough that the trailer needs brakes.
