You could tow that rig with a Camry, corola , or just about any car with a 4 banger. I used to tow my stuff with a ford escort gt and still got 27 mpg while towing 1500# you will get better mileage with newer a 1 ton diesel than a half ton with a v6

I work with some guys that own RAM 1500 4WDs and they are claiming 24+ mpg empty on the highway. Another guy has 14 Ford F-150 with the naturally aspirated 5.0L and he claims about the same MPG. Small engine, small truck doesn't always mean good fuel economy. Those trucks in a 2-WD version might do even better.

I just wish GM could get that figured out, , and I'm a died in the wool GM guy. I don't know if I've ever heard of a GM 1500 anything late model that regularly gets over 20 mpg empty.

I have a 2002 Ford Ranger 4X4 4-speed Auto, Supercab with the 4.0L and a 410 axil ratio. The book says it will tow 5500 lbs. and I don't doubt it. I've "carefully" towed 4700 lbs. with it, and have had no problems. This package also gets me over 20 MPG on the highway. Have I said that I LOVE this truck ! A Ford Ranger with the right package will do everything you are asking. Good luck with your search.
