After charging my battery and even using different batteries, my vxr 650 will start only about 4 times before the battery will not turn over the engine any longer. When I try to jump it, the wires get really hot. It is almost like I have a direct short somewhere. This has been a great father/son project thus far...ie patching/repainting, basic maintenance. We just replaced the solenoid so I don't think it would be the solenoid. Any other suggestions on how to test would be much appreciated.

I have another clue which leads me to the starter. If I take the lead coming off of the solenoid and apply power directly to it, the starter will not start. I can hear the load being applied but nothing changes. I did also pull the plugs and ensure that the engine is turning free which it seems to be. Therefore, it must be my starter, right?
