Simple question. How do I know the type of prop I have? Stainless? Aluminum? It looks like stainless, 3 blades, and only has a number 5241 stamped on it. Any ideas?

Re: Prop identification

The stainless prop is much heavier than an aluminum one. There is no mistaking the two.

Remove the prop nut and look at the face of the prop hub. There should be a part number and the actual ID of the prop diameter and pitch there.

Thanks but nope...did that already. No identification other than the 5241 stamped on the side. The sucker is heavy which leads me to believe it's stainless steel.

Nothing on the propeller to identify the manufacture?

Re: Prop identification

Take it to a local prop shop and maybe they can tell you what it is.

Re: Prop identification

Stainless is MUCH harder than aluminum. Try scratching or dinging (or a file) it in an out of sight area. OR, some stainless is magnetic, some is not. Try a magnet against it. No aluminum is ever magnetic.

Re: Prop identification

Prop rebuilders will sometimes stamp their props with their identification number during a rebuild process. It does not relate to any pitch number. Follow boobie's advice and send it to a prop shop-they and tell you what pitch it is.

Re: Prop identification

Yeah... I think a prop shop is the only way. My other prop is black, much lighter and has the #s in the right place. This...nothing but it works well a least. ;-)

Thanks!

Re: Prop identification

My best guess would be SS but take it to a prop shop to be sure.

Re: Prop identification

unless this prop is something very very special it will have its size on it.
just need to have a closer look.

what engine is this prop on ? make and hp would be a start
then see how many splines she has then see a pic of it.

Re: Prop identification

Here are pictures of the prop; one with the # stamped on it. It was on a 90HP Johnson and worked well. I am parting out the motor and I know someone will ask what kind of prop. If nothing else, I will put it on the next 90. Thanks for looking.
