Hi all,
This is my first post, so bare with me.
Let's start with the basics. I have a 2005 50hp Johnson 2cyl 2 stroke w/ pt&t. I'm running a 12x17 Ballistic prop. I'm turning 6000 rpm @ 37.5mph (gps) My question is; Will this engine take 6 grand?
The OEM prop was a 11.75x17, it ran 5600rpm @ 35.5mph.
Thanks.

Welcome!!

Why wouldnt it take 6000? Its a 2 stroke that runs on roller bearings and needle bearings. No valves, lifters, springs, push rods etc. The rev limiter is probably at 6200 but we can get around that if you like.

The problem is that at 5600 youre at about 6% slip. Thats really not likely. Are you sure the tach is set correctly? What brand tach is it?

Thanks Dhadley,
I thought so too. I have seen a few 2 stroke ATV's toss there cookies from a little to many r's. Does 37.5mph sound about right for a 50hp on a Triton 17ft aluminum without a pad?

The SST 45 (same powerhead as yours) guys turn them a bunch more than that. And they have to be using a stock powerhead -- class rules.

It's a new teleflex. I think it's close. The boats light. It came with a 12x15 oem alu prop, and it ran 34.5mph @ 6000rpm. That's right at 3% slip. I can tell this SS prop has a little more slip.

The tach must be off. To get to even 6% is pretty darn good. Its funny, everytime we talk about rpm and the r's seem to be reading a bit low (numbers dont jive) its a T-flex tach.

If you just got it from a dealer maybe he could verify the r's with a shop tach at wot.

I can barrow a eletronic reed tach from the car dealer I used to work for. It's accurate. I would rather not darken the doors of the dealership where I got it. Bad deal. I already had to buy a temp switch. I bought it out of pocket. Would rather pay than take it back. I tried to get Bombardier to reimburse, was turned down. Oh,well. I would hate to buy a merc, and support a monoply, but might have to next time.
