Tough to beat a combination/setting that leaves the prop shaft level with the surface of the water. You won't find a better starting point for sure!

Yep, prop shaft/AV plate riding parallel to water level when boat is on plane. If OB does not sits at the Sweet OB/Transom Height lower leg will experience water spashes out or over transom or prop aereation issues at speed which will need to be fixed of boat with have a awfull water performance.

I'm guessing a 24' pontoon with a 50 won't be getting on plane.

Light boat with the right prop will, easily. It's not going to go much faster than that though (12-13mph)!

A matter to check if a light toon, lightly loaded with a maximize pitch prop revving to its full wot revs can plane that combo out with a 50 HP-OB. if not, will have a much better fast displacement speed on calm water including throtteling nicely throughout the whole rpm range.
