Hi all! Total boating newbie here.

I'm about ready to take my Mariner 4 on its maiden voyage. I'd like to ask for your advice on the safety gear I need to have on board. It will be powered by a trolling motor and I don't intend to use it at night.

What I think I need:

Life Jacket/PFD (for each person on board)

Sound Producing device (sports whistle, air horn, bell)

Visual Distress Signal (flares, flag, mirror) - Do I really need flares?

Throwable Floatation Device

What I think I don't need:

I think these are only for boats with gas powered motors:

Fire extinguisher (1 type B-I)
Backfire flame arrestors
Ventilation

Navigation lights (I don't intend to sail at night)

Welcome to Iboats,

What stated, without flares + anchor & rope, oars, air pump, VHF small marine radio, fabric patching kit. If you like add a GPS.

What's a good type of anchor for the M4?

For the GPS, I'm looking at the Garmin Striker 4. Any thoughts?

Type of anchor depends entirely on what type of bottom you'll be boating at. Being the Mariner 4 fabric very thin check grapnel folding anchor & rope, just keep it safe. That Garmin will do its homework well..
