I was just wondering. Is it legally necessary to insure it like a car?

I would at least get liability insurance. Check with your homeowners insurance to see if you are covered under it already,

Even if it's not legally necessary, it's a good idea.

I agree about liability. I have "Farmers" and am able to blend it in with my homeowners for more liability but still have to pay $100.00 a year to their offshoot company called "Foremost" which does their boats, ATV's and stuff to insure for $5000.00 loss of boat and motor. Different States can have laws about mandatory liability insurance too. My buddy has to have a $300,000.00 liability at his Minnesota marina just to keep boat in slip. And he also uses "Farmers" (same agent in fact) which simply extends his homeowners liability to his boat for an extra $6.00 a year.
