Cool article about this town at the far northern end of the Overton Arm by the entrance of the Muddy River, est. in 1865 - the year the Civil War ended - and was drown by Lake Mead: Clearing Tamarisk From St. Thomas Ruins

stthomas2.jpg

The foundation of the one-time ice cream parlor in the historic town of St. Thomas stands exposed to view after work crews with Great Basin Institute cleared away encroaching Tamarisk trees.

I've seen the town from a distance several years ago when the lake first exposed it, but it was far too shallow and muddy to get close. We had to use binoculars then. It would be cool to take a road trip there now that it's cleared .

There is also the lost city museum in logandale that is pretty interesting. Kids might get bored, but it shows how overton/logandale was settled. its about a different location, but both are pretty interesting. The museum has a section on the bomber in the lake as well as some adobe houses to look at too.

Re: calling all lake mead boaters! nevada

I just found this site and this is my first time posting (be gentle with me). I've been looking for a forum to learn more about Lake Mead and, in particular, fishing on Mead. We live in Idaho but keep a boat in a slip at Lake Mead Marina (Hemenway) during the winter. We spend a week or 2 a month on the boat. We have been there the last 2 winters and I fish a couple of times while we're there and I get skunked almost every time I go out. We spent time at Swallow Bay and Las Vegas Bay last week and not a bite. Thanks for posting info on this site about good places to beach the boat and enjoy the lake. We love it down there and your posts will help us enjoy it more. Let me know if anyone needs a fishing partner. Thanks again.

Try fishing with storm swim baits sassy shads when trolling and casting near cover and structure around goverment wash or just outside of calville bay between tires and sandy beach, west side of shoreline just release large mouth ok! many tourneys here.many great spots here caught 26 stripers in 32 minutes last summer on one swimbait.awesome right.these lures will produce fish everytime so be ready to set the hook or watch your pole go afloat!!

Re: calling all lake mead boaters! nevada

Thank you Thank you for the help. I never keep any fish I catch so I promise to release them all. At some point I may try to cook a striper but my wife won't let me cook fish on the boat and the marina won't let us use the barbque inside the marina. I can't wait to get there in Feb and try it out. I really appreciate the advice.

Echo Bay Update: I just called there and this is the latest info given over the phone:

no more hotel this year or ever they don't think. how sad. But they are going to have "floatels" which are Forever houseboats permanently at the docks with no motors on them to rent for "a couple hundred a night" the lady said. And they will be adding a snack bar similar to Calville down at the marina this year. She took my name and # and said she will call when they release the floatel rates and more info.

Just thought I would share with everyone. Thanks again Forever Resorts. :(

Ya Kevin, i guess it wont be all that bad. But the hotel rooms were $120/night for the large suite. so a "few hundred" a night seems a bit high but i know their houseboats are pretty nice. Guess we see what happens. Im thinking about staying at temple bar and checking it out, they have good rates. You ever stayed there?

Yeah, I've stayed at Temple and love it. I guess the houseboat thing is appealing as you could share one with two families and be right on the water. The downside of the old Echo Hotel and Temple at these water levels is the rooms are pretty far from the water . . . other than that, Temple is awesome.

Thats true about the water levels. I remember when i was younger and Echo was worried because the water level was getting too close to the hotel. probably around '96 or '98. I think ill make it a point to check out temple bar this year, alot of you guys on here seem to like it.

Oops, made an edit above. With the bypass open, Temple is easier now for sure.

looks like i wont be the only one at the lower campground at echo by myself this year.LOL last time there was my brother and me and two lesbos camping 4 spots away from us.and it was august way hot! wont do that again.drivin the boat with wind in face was the only cooldown method besides hiding under the oleanders bushes!cold beer was even a challenge.funny thing i found out thoses styrafoam coolers from 7-11 out chilled the igloos by far.had ice when igloos were barely cool water.

Yeah, I remember that. Water was so high that you could barely drive a vehicle between the retaining wall below the fish cleaning station and the water's edge. Launch ramp was darn near out the back door of the hotel... :D

The bypass bridge cuts about 20 minutes off the trip into AZ, been over it 5-6 times now. Odd thing, traffic can still build up going through Boulder City and on down to the Hacienda, past the Hacienda it's smooth sailing.

That's sad. It's like an end of an era for sure. It will always be "I remember when..."

At least with the 'floatels' you'll be on the water already. That's what I always loved about houseboating. The price does seem high though..

T-Bar has a shuttle running constantly daily until 6pm. You can get ahold of them on ch 16, or there's a phone at the dock. I take it when we fly out there.

That's weird. Never saw that before the bypass. Why now?

I've seen it a lot before the bridge was done, usually an accident at the dam or foot traffic holding up traffic on the dam. Since the bridge is open, it really doesn't make sense though. Everyone visiting the bridge and walking over it I guess???

Of the 6 times I've been across the new bridge, 2 times it was backed up to BC. Once I was sitting in it and the other time I was coming back to Vegas. Then,,,, I made the mistake of going fishing at Willow Beach 1-3 and had to sit in traffic for 2 hours, New years traffic...

That's for sure. I don't know where they're putting it all, but it has to be costing some real $$. Guess that's where part of the new fees are going..

Good news is we've already hit 1090 Ft ele. and it's filling fast!

I just looked at glen canyon outflow data. I'm not seeing an increase that would support yours. I'm not familiar with mead, what other tributaries do you have?

Virgin River is the main one but there are some that dump into the Grand Canyon as well. I understood that Glen Canyon was releasing more though . . .

Great site for this stuff: http://www.cbrfc.noaa.gov/gmap/gmapm.php?scon=checked
