Please tell me what this clam shell on the bow is for?

I presume you are referring to the clam shell above the bow eye and below the rubrail? If so, that is usually the drain for the anchor locker.

The only thing I can assume you're speaking of is the little round SS thing. That is usually a vent for the fuel tank. If you fill your tank too quickly, there should be fuel spilling out of that thing.
