To make a long story short, I lost the HIN # label on the transom. I have read that there is a secondary location for this #. I have a 1981 Monark. Can anyone tell me the location of this number. Thank you very much in advance!

Is the boat titled or registered with bow numbers? If you're in the U.S., the paperwork has the HIN.

No. In Kentucky, it's the HIN #. I have lost the title recently and trying to get another one, which, in Kentucky, they want a copy of the title and/or the HIN #- I have neither. So, I'm looking for the location of the secondary HIN# that 'they' said to call the manufacturer to find. The Brunswick Marine Monark Div is no longer in business.

Do you have bow numbers and a registration? KY requires the boat registration is carried onboard while in operation and the bow numbers must be on the boat. Is what you lost the registration card?

You said the label with the HIN came off. The HIN tag on the starboard transom is riveted to the aluminum hull or embossed into the transom fiberglass, which ever you have. Hard to lose either one.

You're trying to make my 'long story short' long. The riveted tag on the transom was lost in the rebuild of the transom (the wood had rotted and weakened, so I replaced it) Supposedly, there a second location on the boat somewhere of that HIN#. Do you know where it is? (When you get my age, it's really not that hard to misplace anything )

Outboard or I/O?

Might be under the splashwell (if Outboard) or up under the helm/console/dash depending on layout of the boat

up high and hard to find in and around the engine/bilge/inside transom areas (if I/O)

Or no where, I dont think all makers did 2 HIN tags....

crawl around inside and look in every nook and cranny you can get your head into..

so you removed the exterior transom fiberglass to access/remove/replace the plywood transom?

You must have some state paperwork. I'm trying to drag the story out of you.

No, I don't know if or where a 2nd HIN would be.

I'm old too, so you can't play that card.

GA, Yes, I do have paperwork, everything but the title.
but, they are saying the HIN# on my Certificate of Registration is not valid now, for it has 14 digits and the new system is upgrading for all boats to have 12 digits. My question is why can't they send me a duplicate copy of the title, but they say I need the HIN#. So, I'm chasing my tail here trying to get this, what I thought was a simple problem, straightened out.

jb, thank you for the response. I have an aluminum semi-V, OB w/steering column/console. I will looks under all those places when I get a chance.

Try running your HIN through this decoder. https://www.hindecoder.com/index.php...oat-hin-lookup

If it fails, knock off 1 or 2 of the end digits. Some builders put extra number/letters at the end for model information. Your HIN should end in "81", the year of the boat. From the decoder site, a description of the HIN make up;

What is a HIN (HULL Identification Number)?

HIN is a unique serial number used by the boat industry to identify individual boats, crafts, and vessels. In 1972 (November 1st) the format for HIN numbers was not yet standadized in the United States. In fact, there are three formats having a 12-character HIN. The HULL Identification Number cannot contain the letters I (i), O (o), or Q (q).

The Hull Identification Number systems are named Straight Year Format, Model Year Format, and Current Format. The Current Format is somtimes refered to as CIN (craft identification number). It has come into effect August 1st 1984 and is subject to ISO 10087:2006(en).

The HIN is 12 characters long and is composed of multiple sections depending on the format being used. HinDecoder.com has a proprietary technology that enables us to decode the information contained in the HIN or CIN. Commonly, boat manufacturers added additional characters to the HIN but separated from the HIN by a hyphen.

HIN is normally located in several locations on a boat, but the most common places are:
  • On the transom on top of the load waterline. This is sometimes on the upper starboard quadrant.
  • If there is not transom, the HIN can be on the starboard side at the aft end of the hull that bears the rudder or steering device.
  • Boats with more than one hull have their CIN at the outermost starboard near the aft end of the hull.

Ayuh,...... I've junked tons of hulls, 'n never once found a 2nd hin #,......

What I would do, to satisfy the red tape yer fightin' is,.....

Get a set of number dies,.... Pound the numbers on yer paper work into a piece of scrap metal, 'n then pencil trace that number,......
If the state wants 12 digits, tell them to pick the 2 digits they want to drop,.....

Bondo - The thinking man! :joyous:

That's a good idea. :thumb:

Kenny - What is the HIN on the rego card? If you don't want to share in the open, PM me so we can figure this out.

Working on my '93 Lowe deck boat project this afternoon, taking care of some issues with the rubber rub rail insert. I pulled a piece off the left side of the transom and uncovered an identical, riveted on, ID plate under that rubber insert, on the opposite side of the normal location. Point being, some boats do have secondary locations - if you know where to look.

Seems like another place to look/confirm what you already know, might be the data plate showing max capacities somewhere in the area of the helm?

I found a secondary HIN stuck under the ground bus bar on the inside of the transom on my Mariah while removing the bus bar to clean it. I now have a third one somewhere.

I've only once found a second hin in a boat. Kayot deck boat, the second one was stamped in the fiberglass on the inside of the transom, at the very top. Just about impossible to see unless you had a couple extra joints throughout your body.
